The four-time Formula 1 world champion was issued an in-race penalty while participating in a simulated race at Daytona.
Max Verstappen incurred a drive-through penalty for instigating a collision during the first lap of the IMSA Global Esports Championship.
The four-time Formula 1 world champion was granted a wildcard entry for the online race, competing under the Verstappen.Com Racing name in an Acura vehicle.
Starting from third position on the grid, Verstappen made a bold move, diving inside at the narrow left-hand Turn 1, but unfortunately collided with the leading Williams-BMW car in the championship.
The GTP sector witnessed both vehicles sustaining damage; however, they managed to proceed, with Verstappen receiving a drive-through penalty for instigating a collision.
His teammate, Gustavo Ariel, ultimately finished the race in 12th position.
Verstappen described the incident, explaining that he lost control and ended up locking up the tires.
“I just had a bit of a lock-up in the rear, and with this car, it’s tough to manage that, so I ended up going off track,” he shared.
“Unfortunately, there was another car in my way that I couldn’t dodge, which was a bit of bad luck. It was my fault, though.”
After that, I believe both cars sustained some damage, making the initial part of the race quite challenging. We then came into the pits, and I would say we nearly got the car cleaned up and almost fully repaired, so our pace was nearly back to normal.
I attempted to pass a backmarker, which I think was a GTD car, but he didn’t maintain his line. To be honest, I think he was just trying to stay out of the way, but there was a bit of miscommunication, and I ended up with damage again within just three laps of the stint.
