Tom McKibbin has garnered the nickname ‘the next Rory McIlroy’ from numerous observers in the realm of men’s professional golf. However, it seems that the Northern Irishman is poised to transition to the LIV Golf organization.
Tom McKibbin appears ready to be the newest player to join LIV Golf, shortly after obtaining his PGA Tour card alongside Rory McIlroy.
McKibbin has established himself as one of the leading European players in recent years and has earned one of the 10 PGA Tour cards available to the top performers on the DP World Tour for 2024. However, it seems he may not fully capitalize on this success, as Ten Golf reports that he is nearing a move to the Saudi league.
According to the Spanish publication, McKibbin is a prime target for Jon Rahm, the individual champion of the league in 2025, who is aiming to finalize his Legion XIII team after the departure of Kieran Vincent in 2024.
Last month, LIV sources confirmed to Mirror Sport that one of the ten players who secured a PGA Tour spot at the DP World Tour Championship in November had expressed interest in joining the breakaway league. The potential decision by McKibbin would likely surprise many, including McIlroy.
McKibbin, often referred to as ‘the next McIlroy’ during his ascent in recent years, has also honed his skills at Holywood Golf Club, similar to the four-time major champion. McIlroy has praised his compatriot for his remarkable progress, which includes winning the European Open in 2023.
McKibbin secured his spot on the PGA Tour at the DP World Tour finale, where McIlroy celebrated his sixth Race to Dubai title at the Earth Course. Just after being named champion once again, the 35-year-old noticed McKibbin and quickly inquired if he had done enough to keep his card.
After sharing the exciting news, McKibbin received a heartfelt hug from McIlroy, marking a memorable moment for both. Thrilled for his fellow Hollywood GC member, McIlroy expressed in November, “I was checking the leaderboard and saw Tom made it into the top 10, and I thought, okay, great!”
As I was departing from the last hole, I did not notice his name, but I recognized him before I signed my card. He offered his congratulations, and rather than inquiring further, I simply asked, ‘Yay or nay?’ He responded with, ‘Yes.’ I am pleased for him, as securing one of those ten cards and having the opportunity to play in America was a significant objective for him. I am truly delighted for his achievement.
However, McKibbin may face challenges, as the PGA Tour has prohibited any player who transitions to LIV. This week, the Northern Irishman will partner with one of the Legion XIII members on the DP World Tour, teaming up with Tyrrell Hatton to represent Great Britain and Ireland at the Team Cup.
Additionally, they are scheduled to participate in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic the following week, where Legion XIII captain Rahm will also compete in preparation for the inaugural LIV event of the season in Riyadh on February 6.
