Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese was present at Game 5 of the WNBA finals, seated courtside to witness the decisive game between the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty.
During the game, Reese was seen with her ex-WNBA coach, Teresa Weatherspoon. Reese shared a photo of their encounter on social media, writing “Feeling so grateful,” and tagging her ex-coach on Instagram.
Weatherspoon served as Reese’s coach during her inaugural season, shortly before being dismissed from her head coaching position following the 2024 season.
In spite of Weatherspoon’s departure from the Sky, Reese has articulated that she maintains a strong connection with her former coach.
“I am devastated. I am truly at a loss for words regarding the significance this woman has had in such a crucial period of my life,” Reese expressed in September after Weatherspoon’s termination. “She was the sole individual who had faith in me… We forged a relationship in a brief span that will endure forever… I love you, TSpoon.”
Weatherspoon served as the head coach of the Chicago Sky for a single season. The Chicago Sky finished their only season in Chicago with a 13-27 record, ranked as the 10th team in the WNBA standings.
Although the Sky had a disappointing season in 2024, Reese stood out as a bright spot. In her first year playing for the Sky, Reese had an average of 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game. In her debut season, she earned a spot in the WNBA All-Star team and placed second in the Rookie of the Year rankings, just after Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.
As Reese and Weatherspoon engaged in conversation on the sidelines, the Liberty achieved a 67-62 victory in Game 5. This triumph over the Lynx allowed New York to claim the 2024 WNBA championship.
Liberty center Jonquel Jones was named the WNBA Finals MVP, contributing 17 points, six rebounds, and one assist in the decisive match.
