Netflix set to air Rory McIlroy’s dramatic US Open fallout in upcoming Full Swing series

Rory McIlroy experienced embarrassment when a Netflix documentary crew accompanied him into the locker room following his disappointing performance at the US Open, with the footage scheduled for release next year.

Footage documenting Rory McIlroy’s locker room incident following the US Open is scheduled for public release next year. This comes after the golf champion experienced a disappointing finish at Pinehurst, where he witnessed Bryson DeChambeau surpass him for the title from the clubhouse.

McIlroy was on the verge of securing his first major win since 2014 but faltered by bogeying three of the final four holes, including two short putts, despite having not missed a putt from within three feet throughout the season.

Consequently, the Northern Ireland golfer was left to observe as DeChambeau capitalized on his misfortunes. This was further compounded by additional drama that unfolded behind the scenes, all of which was recorded by the cameras of Netflix’s Full Swing, with the third season set to premiere in 2025.

McIlroy found himself unexpectedly trailed into the locker rooms by a documentary crew, still shaken from his last-hole collapse at Pinehurst, prompting a top USGA official to step in and stop the situation. In a fit of anger, McIlroy quickly left the course, bypassing his media duties after a tense encounter in the champions’ locker area.

As the 2011 champion, McIlroy was allowed to use the space while he packed up his things, hoping to exit quietly. However, he and his team were pursued by a crew equipped with a camera and a boom mic. USGA CEO Mike Whan took a moment from his tournament presentation preparations to step in, asking security, “Do we want them in here?”

Whan demonstrated empathy towards McIlroy during a challenging moment, recognizing that this understanding was not reciprocated by the Netflix crew, who were eager to capture the runner-up’s immediate response to his significant loss.

There were uncertainties regarding the release of a third season of Full Swing, even though McIlroy and his competitors continued to be filmed. The world No. 3 may have been hopeful that his reactions following the disappointment at the US Open would remain unseen.

In March, series producer Chad Mumm expressed optimism for the approval of a third season, although he had not received any confirmation from Netflix. He conveyed to Golf Monthly: “We have not yet made any official announcement regarding that (the confirmation of a third series). We are waiting with great anticipation, as I hope the rest of the world is as well.”

Fans worldwide will have the opportunity to witness the rollercoaster of emotions McIlroy experienced during his late-game struggle against DeChambeau, who remarked that he “never would have wished it on anybody.” While a specific release date hasn’t been set, Netflix has announced that Full Swing will return in 2025.
