Jon Rahm hits out at DPWT fines despite Ryder Cup lifeline as LIV Golf star faces hefty bill

Jon Rahm has expressed his desire to continue as a member of the DP World Tour and participate in events on the Wentworth-based circuit; however, he has no intention of settling the fines imposed as a result of his transition to LIV Golf.

Jon Rahm has disclosed that he does not intend to settle the fines owed to the DP World Tour, even as he has expressed his plan to return to the Wentworth-based organization later this month.

In recent months, Rahm’s future with the DP World Tour has been a significant topic of discussion, particularly concerning his status for the Ryder Cup. The Spanish golfer must participate in four Tour events before the year’s conclusion to maintain his membership and qualify for the European team at Bethpage Black.

Currently, the former world No. 1 has only participated in one Tour-sanctioned event, which was the Olympic Games last month. This means he needs to compete in three more events before the year wraps up.

During his appearance at LIV Chicago on Wednesday, Rahm expressed his commitment to meeting these requirements, starting with the Spanish Open later this month, followed by the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and the Andalucia Masters. However, he mentioned that he is awaiting approval from the DP World Tour, as he has outstanding fines and a suspension due to his participation in ‘conflicting’ LIV events.

He mentioned in Chicago, “I’m still in talks with the DP World Tour and plan to compete in Spain. Whether they allow me to participate is another matter. I’m not particularly fond of the fines, and I’ve been quite vocal about that.

“I have no intention of paying those fines, and we’re continuously trying to engage in a conversation with them to find a way forward. I’ve expressed numerous times that my motivation for attending the Spanish Open isn’t about seeking glory; it’s about fulfilling my responsibility to Spanish golf. Plus, I’m eager to play in Sotogrande for the Andalucia Masters.”

At that juncture, it would be a disservice not only to myself but also to Spanish golf if I were not permitted to participate. Therefore, we are actively engaging in discussions to facilitate this opportunity. Additionally, I have a strong desire to compete in the Dunhill event, as a close friend has invited me to join, and Johan Rupert, the tournament sponsor, has proven to be an exceptional ambassador for the sport of golf.

“I aspire to participate in all of these events.” Tyrell Hatton, a teammate of Rahm’s Legion XIII, finds himself in a comparable predicament. To fulfill his requirement of competing in four events, Hatton has contested the penalties imposed on him, which allowed him to participate in the British Masters two weeks prior.

The Englishman now has to make two additional appearances, as he aims to compete alongside Rahm in Spain and at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship the week after.
