Phil Mickelson is gearing up for the highly anticipated Pros vs Schmos event scheduled to take place in Chicago, a competition regulated by ‘Phil’s Book of Rules’. The esteemed golfer generated excitement for the event by issuing a challenge to LIV Golf competitor Ian Poulter in May. In preparation for this, the 54-year-old disclosed his penchant for creating unique rules.
During a press conference prior to the LIV Golf Greenbrier event, Mickelson addressed the significant disparity in skill levels between professional golfers and amateurs. Subsequently, he was inquired about the ‘most important rule’ in what he referred to as ‘Phil’s Book of Rules.’ In a lighthearted manner, the six-time Major champion remarked that he has the liberty to create rules as he competes.
Notably, Mickelson, who has openly acknowledged his past struggles with gambling addiction, mentioned that there are ‘numerous blank pages’ concerning the rules of golf.
Phil Mickelson said on Thursday (August 15) while speaking alongside his HyFlyers GC teammates, as quoted by ASAP Sports:
“(The most important rule) Is that I can make them up as we golf, so there’s like a lot of blank pages that we just kind of fill in as we go.”
Interestingly, his teammates were quick to concur. Cameron Tringale remarked that it is “absolutely true,” while Brendan Steele chimed in, saying it’s “always a pleasure to be Phil’s partner when his book is released.” Mickelson joined in the fun, agreeing with Steele’s observation.
Although the competition has been revealed, details about the specific rulebook remain sparse. It’s worth mentioning that the Pros vs Schmos event takes place just a few months after the star golfer emphasized the importance of experimenting with new formats and ideas in golf to attract younger audiences to the game.
