“There’s a little bit of a crisis” – LIV Golf star Joaquin Niemann gets bluntly honest on PGA-PIF merger

Joaquin Niemann concluded the opening round of the golf competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in a tie for third position. He stands as the highest-ranked among the seven LIV Golf participants competing at Le Golf National.

In the press conference following his round, Joaquin Niemann addressed inquiries regarding the ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia.

Here is part of what Joaquin Niemann had to say (via Sports Illustrated):

“I feel like it’s what I do and I feel like right now, there’s a little bit of a crisis and things that have to be fixed. I just play another week of golf and try to earn my way into the majors, and that’s what I did last year.”

Niemann shared his approach to accumulating points that could help him qualify for the Majors. The Chilean plans to repeat what he did in 2024:

“I would love to play some DP World Tour events. I don’t know if I’m going to be allowed or not, but yeah, I would love to play some events. If I can get some World Ranking and see if I can get any spots into the majors, yeah.”

Joaquin Niemann was at the forefront among the seven LIV Golf competitors during the initial round of the Olympic event. Jon Rahm secured a tie for 6th place, while Carlos Ortiz finished in a tie for 14th. David Puig and Mito Pereira both ended the round tied for 21st, Abraham Ancer was tied for 29th, and Adrian Meronk concluded the round in a tie for 49th place.

Niemann completed the front nine without any bogeys and added two more birdies to his score. On the back nine, he parred the first four holes consecutively before sinking birdies on the 14th and 15th holes.

The Chilean made par on both the 16th and 17th holes, but recorded a bogey on the 18th, marking his sole bogey of the round. He concluded with a final score of 5 under 66.
