Bryson DeChambeau has been inquired about Xander Schauffele after the current Olympic champion secured the second major title of his career at The Open.
Bryson DeChambeau shared his thoughts on the impact of Xander Schauffele’s recent achievements.
Together, they have clinched victory in the most recent three golf majors, igniting a competitive yet respectful rivalry in the elite realm of the sport. Schauffele’s triumph at The Open earlier this month, where he secured his second major title, marked a significant milestone as he became the first player since Brooks Koepka in 2018 to achieve such a feat.
In May, Schauffele managed to birdie the last hole, securing a victory over DeChambeau by just one stroke and clinching the PGA Championship. DeChambeau then made a comeback at the US Open, capitalizing on Rory McIlroy’s unfortunate collapse, to secure his second major win.
Having competed against each other for years, there is a possibility of a long-standing rivalry developing between the two as they strive for major titles. Nevertheless, DeChambeau claims that he has always used Schauffele as a benchmark for his own performance and is thrilled to see the 30-year-old excel on the biggest stages in golf.
Throughout our time together on the golf course, from junior golf to collegiate golf, he has always stood out as a superstar,” DeChambeau acknowledged prior to LIV London, where Jon Rahm emerged victorious. “I have always admired his talent and thought to myself, ‘If I can surpass him, that would be a significant achievement.’ He is destined for greatness.
“Watching his career progress and witnessing his improvement over time has been truly inspiring. Winning two majors this year marks a monumental milestone for him. I am eagerly looking forward to facing off against him in future major tournaments.”
He’s definitely going to be a tough competitor, and his success motivates us all to push ourselves a bit more. Achieving two wins in a year is quite a challenge, and his accomplishment proves that it’s possible for us too.
Schauffele is gearing up to defend his Olympic gold medal in Paris, and he’ll be joined by fellow Americans Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, and Collin Morikawa. On the other hand, DeChambeau will have to sit this one out after not making the cut.
His choice to join LIV Golf plays a significant role in this situation, as the events in the Saudi-backed tour do not earn world ranking points, which are crucial for Olympic selection. This exclusion will be tough for DeChambeau, especially since he was originally slated to participate in the Tokyo Games in 2021 but had to withdraw later on.
“I had an opportunity in 2021 [Tokyo Olympics] but couldn’t attend due to COVID, which was really unfortunate,” he shared. “I contracted it just a week before, which was disappointing. I still got to experience some of the events, which was amazing, but not being able to compete in 2021 leaves me with a sense of sadness.”
Starting this year, there is a slight change in circumstances. The ongoing situation between LIV and PGA has altered things, so it is possible that a tournament might take place. However, at present, I am looking forward to watching it.
