The discussion surrounding Rory McIlroy’s international allegiance caused frustration for the golf superstar before he ultimately made a decision on the country he would represent in 2021.
Rory McIlroy, a prominent figure in the world of golf, has openly expressed his previous feelings of resentment towards the Olympics due to the difficult decision he had to make regarding which country to represent.
The four-time major championships winner is now getting ready for his second participation in the Games, where he will be proudly representing Team Ireland in Paris. His initial experience at the Olympics took place three years ago in Tokyo, where he narrowly missed out on securing a medal for Ireland during the bronze play-off.
As the 2021 Games approached, the discussion about his international allegiance was a hot topic – considering the 26-time PGA Tour event champion was eligible to choose between Ireland and Great Britain. Hailing from County Down, the 35-year-old ultimately opted to represent Ireland due to his previous participation at junior and amateur levels.
Given his ties to Northern Ireland, McIlroy found himself in a challenging position, confessing that he struggled to decide on the best course of action. By skipping the 2016 Olympics when golf made its return after over a century, he seemed hesitant to firmly commit to a specific national allegiance.
Reflecting on the discussion that followed the Rio de Janeiro Games, the golfer shared with the Sunday Independent: “Suddenly, I found myself in a situation where I had to question my identity. Who am I? Where do I come from? Where do my allegiances lie? Who should I represent? Whom do I least want to disappoint?”
“I began to feel resentment. And I still do. I resent the Olympics because of the dilemma it placed me in,” he admitted, while honestly recounting his thoughts on the matter at that time. “That’s my sentiment towards it. Whether it’s right or wrong, that’s how I perceive it.”
McIlroy’s change of heart regarding the Olympics proved to be a wise choice, as he expressed his enjoyment of the experience after the most recent Games. Reflecting on his decision, he mentioned, “I had to really think about it and ask myself… Is this something that truly matters to me?”
“What is my motivation for participating in [The Olympics]? Which country do I want to compete for? Those were the questions I had to answer,” he explained, while also expressing his happiness about being part of the Games, stating, “It was an incredible experience. I’ve never had an opportunity like that before.”
Ultimately, considering the current state of golf and its inclusion in the Olympic movement, I believe that reflecting on my career, I would have likely felt regretful if I had not participated in at least one Olympic Games.
