PGA Tour star Scottie Scheffler can’t avoid police joke at award show

American comedian Nikki Glaser was on hand to present the honour for Best Male Athlete at the 2024 ESPY Awards on Thursday night – and she didn’t hold back in her roasts of the nominees.

Comedian Nikki Glaser, who just finished her uproarious appearance at Netflix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady,” playfully poked fun at world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler during the 2024 ESPY Awards – a prestigious annual ceremony in the United States honoring athletes.

Glaser took the stage at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday to announce the recipient of the Best Male Athlete award. Without delay, the 40-year-old began humorously teasing the nominees.

Directing her focus towards the athletes in contention for the award, Glaser singled out Scheffler. The golfer had gained notoriety after being arrested outside Valhalla Golf Club prior to the second round of the PGA Championship in May, although the charges were eventually dismissed.

The list of nominees features top athletes who constantly challenge their physical limits, as well as a golfer,” she began. “I apologize, Scottie. I understand that golfing is no easy feat. I mean, there’s putting, chipping, and driving over a cop’s leg.”

Her joke elicited a boisterous round of laughter from the audience, although not everyone may have found it funny. Speaking about the incident last month for the first time since four charges against him – including felony second-degree assault of a police officer – were dropped, Scheffler admitted that the experience was quite distressing.

He informed the reporters, “I can confidently say that I have not completely overcome it. Even though the charges have been dropped, I still feel that I haven’t fully moved on from it. In fact, now it seems more suitable for people to inquire about it and the situation. To be frank, it’s not something I enjoy revisiting, as the experience of being arrested while entering the golf course was quite traumatic for me.”

Discussing this matter is not a topic I enjoy, and I am looking forward to putting it behind me. However, when the charges are dismissed, it is just the initial step in moving forward from it, if that is understandable. I am currently navigating through this process. While it did bring some relief, it is not complete relief as this experience will always be a part of me.

Fortunately for Scheffler, he wasn’t the sole athlete targeted by Glaser during Thursday evening’s roast. Following her amusing joke about the golfer, she shifted her comedic focus to Edmonton Oilers hockey star Connor McDavid.

Poking fun at the Oilers’ unfortunate defeat to the Florida Panthers in the NHL’s Stanley Cup Final, Glaser joked: “Looks like the only Stanley Cup Connor will be lifting is the one his wife tells him to take from the cupboard.”

Glaser also playfully teased award-winner Patrick Mahomes, revealing that her interest in football was sparked by Taylor Swift’s relationship with Travis Kelce.
