Robert McIntyre says he will ‘never forgive’ Rory McIlroy for action that got him a plaque as tribute at Scottish Open

Rory McIlroy will be honored with a plaque for an incredible shot at the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open. This shot played a significant role in his victory over Robert MacIntyre, who narrowly missed forcing a playoff last year by just one stroke. As they reunite for the tournament today, MacIntyre is still reflecting on that unforgettable moment.

A  reporter asked whether or not he could forgive McIlroy for what happened. He said (7:57-8:31):

“I don’t think I’ll ever forgive him, if don’t win a Scottish Open… It was an incredible golf shot he hit. It was a winning shot, really. I think he thought he missed – well I know he thought he’d missed – his putt. Obviously the wind kept the…in…but it’s just something like you play at the old Porsche tournament in Germany, and they plant trees. So it’s something that was a good shot and it was a bit heartbreaking.”

McIlroy faced challenging wind conditions as he executed a remarkable 202-yard approach shot that surpassed expectations. This shot set him up for a short putt, which he managed to sink narrowly, securing a one-stroke lead over MacIntyre. The intense competition between the two players could potentially place them back at the top of the leaderboard this weekend.

This marks McIlroy’s comeback to the sport after a hiatus. His absence from the golf course dates back to the US Open, where he struggled and missed crucial putts in the final holes, ultimately losing to Bryson DeChambeau. This defeat left McIlroy in need of a much-needed break.

He’s returned to a tournament where he’s achieved great success (success that has made him legendary) and is optimistic about a comeback. MacIntyre is determined to secure a victory at the Genesis Scottish Open. Maybe then he can move on from the incident involving McIlroy.

Robert MacIntyre asked Rory McIlroy about Scottish Open win

During the press conference, Robert MacIntyre was questioned about his interaction with Rory McIlroy during their time together on Team Europe at the Ryder Cup a few months later. He acknowledged that he had posed a question to him through Yahoo Sports!.

He said:

“I had not spoken to him at all about it since the day it happened, and I always wanted to ask him about the putt (on 18). He thought he had missed it and it went in. So it just shows you, it doesn’t have to be perfect for it to work out.”

MacIntyre finally secured his first career victory of the season by winning the RBC Canadian Open, a tournament previously won by Rory McIlroy. It will be interesting to see if he can achieve a similar feat at another tournament where McIlroy holds the title.
