Having joined LIV Golf in July 2022, Phil Mickelson recently opened up about his experience so far. The six-time Major Champion joined HyFlyers GC two years ago.
During a conversation with Jerry Foltz and Su-Ann Heng, Mickelson expressed his anticipation of facing difficulties in the early years at LIV Golf. He said (via LIV Golf):
“I knew the first two years were going to be rough and here we are, two years in now, and it’s totally different. We’re having a blast here. We’re having so much fun.” (23:11-23:22)
The LIV Golfers have encountered suspensions from the PGA Tour and have forfeited the OWGR points, creating obstacles for their involvement in Majors. In March, the PGA Tour expressed its optimism regarding a potential merger with LIV Golf. Nevertheless, no agreement has been reached with the breakaway tour thus far.
Phil Mickelson also discussed the future of his team, HyFlyers GC. Mickelson serves as the captain of this team, which consists of Brendan Steele, Cameron Tringale, and Andy Ogletree. When questioned about his aspirations for HyFlyers GC, Mickelson shared his vision. He said (via LIV Golf):
“I don’t know this, but I believe in discussions that we’ve had and in our planning and so forth, that each team will ultimately have a home base, a home golf course. And it’s going to take some time, but we’re already looking into this, you know. We want to have world-class instruction and a world-class training facility where you can practice and play, with all the things that I’ve learned, so that your practice has a purpose.” (15:24-15:53)
HyFlyers GC has had a rather disappointing start to the 2024 season. Currently, the team finds itself in the 12th position, which is not where they had hoped to be. It’s quite a contrast from last year when they finished in the ninth position.
A look at Phil Mickelson’s performance in 2024
Phil Mickelson’s season has been disappointing thus far. The LIV Golfer managed to secure only one top-10 finish and two top-25 finishes in the current year. His journey began with a T51 finish at Mayakoba, followed by a T30 finish at Las Vegas. Mickelson’s most notable performance was at LIV Golf Jeddah, where he finished T6. Another noteworthy finish was at Singapore, where he secured a T22 position.
Currently, he holds the 43rd spot on the LIV Golf individual rankings, a decline from his 39th rank in 2023 and 34th rank in 2022. Mickelson will need to make a significant turnaround to enhance his performance for the remainder of the year.
Phil Mickelson had a decent performance on the PGA Tour this year. He secured a T43 position at the renowned Augusta National Golf tournament. However, he faced disappointment as he failed to make the cut at both the 2024 PGA Championship held at Valhalla and the recently concluded US Open 2024.
