PGA Tour star confirms stance on Rory McIlroy decision after US Open nightmare

Xander Schauffele was quizzed about Rory McIlroy’s reaction to coming narrowly close to winning the US Open and his subsequent decision to take a short break from golf.

Xander Schauffele has expressed his backing for Rory McIlroy’s choice to take a short break from golf following his near victory at the US Open.

McIlroy’s decade-long wait for another major title was almost over, but it slipped through his fingers due to two unfortunate missed putts. Despite holding a one-shot lead, he narrowly missed a short putt on the 16th hole, and the same misfortune struck again on the 18th, allowing DeChambeau to secure his second US Open title.

Expressing his disappointment on social media, McIlroy acknowledged that Sunday was perhaps the most challenging day of his professional career. He revealed his plan to take a few weeks off from the game to reflect on everything and prepare himself for the upcoming Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon. McIlroy concluded his message by stating, “See you in Scotland.”

McIlroy faced backlash for avoiding the press right after his loss at Pinehurst and will not be participating in the Travelers Championship starting this Sunday. On the other hand, Schauffele has acknowledged that he can relate to how the four-time major champion must be feeling.

“Being a competitor, we’ve all experienced ups and downs to some extent. It’s a challenging situation,” Schauffele mentioned when questioned about his ability to understand McIlroy’s position. I’m certain that he and his team are currently analyzing the situation.

At times, it is necessary to take a step back and strive to be as impartial as one can be. Being fully immersed in the situation where things did not go as planned can cloud judgment. It is essential for him to take a break and reflect on the situation to gain clarity.

Schauffele was previously recognized as the most accomplished player without a major victory until his recent triumph at the PGA Championship. Despite securing four top-three finishes at major tournaments, the Olympic gold medalist acknowledges that McIlroy bears a greater burden of expectation to achieve success.

“It varies for each person. Comparing my losses to his losses is difficult,” Schauffele explained. “I believe he faces more scrutiny. When he’s performing exceptionally well, people are all over him, but unfortunately, when things don’t go his way, people criticize him.

“Therefore, there’s intense scrutiny on why he didn’t win and similar questions, which he will have to address eventually. And he will, because he always does. As for me, I take my losses to heart, but sometimes it’s refreshing to get back in the game and compete.”
