Adam Scott’s Major streak remains alive at US Open due to withdrawal of late golfer Grayson Murray

Adam Scott had played in 91 straight Major tournaments heading into the 2024 US Open. He wasn’t in the field until Monday, June 10, three days before the tournament started. Without automatic qualification, Scott’s streak, the longest among active golfers, was in jeopardy.

Nevertheless, a single condition motivated him to enter the competition. In order to automatically qualify for the US Open, players must be ranked within the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Scott currently holds the 61st position, placing him right on the edge of eligibility.

If Grayson Murray had not tragically passed away, he would have secured his qualification for the event as he held the 59th position in the world rankings. However, his untimely death created a vacancy in the rankings, which Adam Scott was next in line to fill.

If Scott had not been included in the tournament, he would have narrowly missed out on maintaining an impressive and historic streak. Ryan Fox managed to secure the 60th spot in the Official World Golf Rankings with an average point of 1.9495. In contrast, Scott’s average point was 1.9494, leaving him just 0.0001 points away from qualifying.

Scott is set to make his 23rd consecutive appearance at the US Open. Since turning pro, the Australian golfer has been a regular contender in the Majors, and this impressive streak shows no signs of stopping.

Thanks to his performance in qualifying tournaments, Scott has already secured his spot in the Open Championship field for July. Barring any unforeseen injuries, he will undoubtedly be part of the competition, further extending his remarkable streak to an impressive 93 consecutive Major starts.

The upcoming Masters Tournament in April 2025 is the next major event on the schedule, but Scott is not yet eligible to participate. He will need to secure his qualification or an exemption within the next 10 months.

Adam Scott currently holds the longest active streak in golf, second only to Jack Nicklaus who played in an impressive 146 Majors from 1962 to 1998. Scott still has a considerable distance to cover before reaching Nicklaus’ record.
