Jordan Spieth one of four PGA Tour stars to suffer nightmare US Open preparation

Jordan Spieth struggled to find his best form at the Memorial Tournament on Thursday and Friday, missing the cut at Muirfield Village just days before the U.S. Open begins.

Jordan Spieth and several other PGA Tour players faced less than optimal preparation for the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst, having failed to make the cut at the Memorial Tournament on Friday.

Spieth narrowly missed making the cut for the weekend at Muirfield Village, falling short by a single shot. After completing the first two rounds, he finished the tournament at five-over-par. Despite a remarkable eagle on the seventh hole during his opening round on Thursday, he made several errors that nullified his progress.

These mistakes resulted in five bogeys throughout the first 18 holes, concluding day one with a two-over round of 74. Consequently, Spieth faced a significant challenge as he approached Friday’s play, requiring substantial effort to improve his position.

Spieth’s luck took a turn for the worse on the second day, as he followed up his 74 on day one with a disappointing three-over 75. Unfortunately, this means his time in Ohio, Dublin will be cut short. It’s a tough break for Spieth, especially with the U.S. Open just around the corner.

However, Spieth wasn’t the only one facing difficulties at the Memorial. Defending U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark also failed to make the cut. Clark, who had a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year, was surely hoping to regain his winning form before his title defense next Thursday.

Unfortunately, Clark’s performance at the tournament did not meet expectations. He, like his Ryder Cup teammate, missed the cut by one stroke due to a disappointing finish on Friday. A double-bogey on the par-five 15th hole, followed by a bogey on the 18th, proved costly for the U.S. Open champion. His inability to recover from a poor start on Thursday, where he shot a five-over 77, ultimately led to his elimination from the competition.

Clark’s 2024 season has been inconsistent, with missed cuts at the Masters and U.S. PGA Championships despite a victory at Pebble Beach earlier in the year. Additionally, Patrick Cantlay also faced challenges at Muirfield Village, making it a forgettable week for him on the golf course.

Cantlay has been struggling to regain his top form this season, which has made him one of the best players in the world in recent years. Unfortunately, his struggles continued on Friday as he shot a four-over 76, following his three-over 75 from the previous day. As a result, he missed the cut at the Memorial by three shots.

On the other hand, Rickie Fowler had an even worse week at the tournament. He finished in dead-last place, ending his tournament two days early with a disappointing 13-over-par score. Fowler’s performance in the first round on Thursday was far from his best, as he carded a frustrating four-over 76 to start his tournament.

There were no indications of a rebound the following day, as he recorded three double bogeys and six bogeys, resulting in a disappointing 10-over 82 in the second round. With his sights set on a major victory, the six-time PGA Tour winner will be aiming to turn his luck around in the upcoming week.
