The LIV Golf star has opened up on the pressures of professional golf.
Bryson DeChambeau is well-versed in the scrutiny and expectations that come with being in the spotlight, having been hailed as a rising star during his teenage years and eventually establishing himself as a prominent figure in the global golfing community.
This week, he is set to capture a significant amount of attention once again. The local fans in Texas, his home state, are eagerly rooting for him to emerge victorious at LIV Golf Houston.
Ahead of his upcoming tournament, which marks his return after securing second place at the PGA Championship last month, he engaged with the media. During this interaction, he candidly discussed the significance of mental well-being, particularly in light of the unfortunate passing of Grayson Murray and the rise of young talent Miles Russell.
Initially, he addressed the matter of Murray, who tragically ended his own life following his withdrawal from the PGA Tour’s Charles Schwab Challenge. He expressed, “To begin with, I must mention that I had a good acquaintance with Grayson, and up until now, I haven’t openly discussed this, but I extend my deepest sympathies to his family. The challenges we face as professionals are not to be taken lightly. My heart truly grieves for him and his loved ones.”
DeChambeau might come across as extremely confident, but he has acknowledged that there were moments when he doubted himself, especially when his form was not at its best. He emphasized the importance of taking mental health seriously.
He continued by saying: “The sport of golf can be quite unforgiving. Young players, especially those who show promise, face a great deal of pressure.
I have personally faced moments of self-doubt on a significant scale, as has my team. Even during times when my performance was below par, such as missing 14 cuts in a row and still having to face the intense pressure on the course. It is crucial for all of us to prioritize our mental well-being in such a demanding environment.”
DeChambeau shifted his focus to a promising young talent in the sport, Miles Russell, who is set to make his debut on the PGA Tour at the Rocket Mortgage Classic later this month, at the age of 15. He expressed, “Miles has an incredible opportunity ahead, and what makes LIV so special is the team aspect. We can count on our teammates and support each other as players.”
Regardless of the tour you are participating in, whether it be mini-tours or challenge tours, the pressure remains significant. I believe that Miles will face a good challenge, and I trust that he has a supportive team to guide him in a positive direction, as we all require that support in the end.
DeChambeau later revisited the topic of Murray, emphasizing that the challenges in golf should not be taken lightly: “Despite his difficulties, he was a friend and a decent person, and we must acknowledge the seriousness of the pressures in this sport,” he expressed. “I genuinely hope Miles achieves success. He’s an exceptional golfer. However, it’s crucial for all of us to have a strong support network, which is exactly what LIV offers.”
DeChambeau made his remarks a week following the retirement announcement of Lexi Thompson, another player who has experienced fame from a young age. Thompson, who will be stepping away from full-time professional golf at the conclusion of the season, also shared her personal challenges with the media prior to the US Women’s Open. During her interview, she acknowledged the immense pressure and admitted that being in the spotlight can sometimes feel overwhelming. Despite her efforts to remain composed, Thompson apologized for any emotional moments that may arise during the discussion.
I believe that, especially considering recent events in golf, many people are unaware of the challenges we face as professional athletes.
