Grayson Murray passed away on Monday (May 27), a few hours after playing at the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge at the young age of 30. Murray had withdrawn from the tournament the day before after the 16th hole of the second round citing an illness.
The golfer, who had won twice on the PGA Tour, had been candid about his mental health challenges and issues with alcohol. Unfortunately, Murray tragically ended his own life after deciding to withdraw. In the wake of this heartbreaking news, countless individuals worldwide have turned to social media to pay tribute to his lasting legacy and the impact he made.
Grayson Murray once assisted a man named Patrick Sullivan, who used to play on the Korn Ferry Tour and faced mental health challenges. The deceased PGA Tour athlete contacted him on Instagram, supporting him during a difficult period as he dealt with his own issues.
The message from Murray said:
“Hey dude I know we’ve never met but I read the web.com post about your depression and anxiety. I dealt with it myself. I’m taking a medical the rest of the year to take care of it. Keep plugging along man you aren’t alone. Good luck the rest of the season hopefully see you out on tour next year.”
Sad to hear about the passing of Grayson Murray. I didn’t know him at all, but he was one of the people who reached out to me when I was struggling. I will always remember that. RIP. pic.twitter.com/hXWeDq2QOM

The PGA Tour received a statement from Eric and Terry Murray, parents of Grayson Murray, informing them that the 30-year-old golfing sensation tragically ended his own life shortly after withdrawing from the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge.
Murray had been candid about his challenges both on and off the golf course, as he battled with mental health issues and alcohol dependency following a life-threatening bike accident prior to the 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The statement issued by his parents read:
“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare…We would like to thank the PGA TOUR and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”
