LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau once shared how he was at “risk of a heart attack” due to excessive eating to gain muscle

Back in July 2023, American golfer, Bryson DeChambeau spoke about his weight fluctuations. He had undergone a pretty significant shift in his body weight in an attempt to gain muscle.

The intention was for DeChambeau to ingest a substantial amount of food and subsequently engage in training to convert the excess fat into muscle. By increasing his muscle mass, he aimed to gain a significant edge in driving distance off the tee compared to the majority of other golfers globally. Nevertheless, the strategy did not unfold as he had envisioned.

He reaped the rewards in the short run when he clinched his solitary major triumph at the 2020 Open Championship. His hard work and the added pounds he gained played a part in his triumph, but regrettably, the transformation brought along some unwanted consequences.

Back in 2023, he spoke to iNews with regard to the same:

“I was at the risk of a heart attack the way I was going,” he said. “I had an HS-CRP of 8 [liver protein indicator]. I thought being big would continue to make me stronger and then that strength would enable me to hit it longer. It’s more complicated than that,” he said.

Bryson DeChambeau felt ‘lethargic’ while trying to bulk up

Bryson DeChambeau not only faced a significant threat to his life, but he also found himself in an extremely unfavorable condition concerning his physical well-being. Despite his strength, he lacked any form of energy.

“When I got really big really quickly I felt lethargic. My body was in a spot where it wasn’t going to last very long. I have gotten myself in a better place. I feel 1,000 per cent better. I feel like I have added 40 or 50 years to my life,” he admitted.

DeChambeau decided to abandon that approach and went back to his regular eating habits. Despite this change, he still possesses the ability to hit the ball farther than anyone else in the world with his golf clubs. However, his primary focus nowadays is to emerge victorious in competitions.

This shift in mindset almost yielded significant results last weekend when DeChambeau showcased an exceptional performance at the 2024 PGA Championship. He finished second, shooting an impressive 20 under par.

If it weren’t for a crucial birdie on the 18th hole (similar to DeChambeau’s own birdie finish to equalize the score), a playoff between him and Xander Schauffele would have been inevitable, leaving the outcome uncertain.

Bryson DeChambeau has consistently shown a fascination with the scientific aspects of golf, which motivated him to experiment with a radical approach like increasing his muscle mass. Unfortunately, the results didn’t align with his expectations, leading him to explore alternative strategies.
