PGA Championship 2024: Phil Mickelson gave a classic response to fan wanting to make bet with him

Phil Mickelson has undergone a transformation. Specifically, in regards to his gambling habits. Furthermore, there is now concrete evidence in the form of a video.

According to information in Billy Walters’ 2023 publication, it was revealed that Mickelson placed over 7,000 bets between 2010 and 2014, resulting in losses exceeding $100 million. The renowned golfer acknowledged his gambling addiction and pledged to abstain from betting on football in the previous year. Unfortunately, this decision came at an inopportune moment as Taylor Swift’s Chiefs were considered a sure bet to win the Super Bowl in the most recent NFL season.

Mickelson’s pre-tournament money games on the PGA Tour were always legendary. There are classic tales of him betting on the set of “Tin Cup” and with announcers and fans during tournaments. But Wild Phil is no more.

At the PGA Championship’s first round on Thursday, a fan at Valhalla offered Mickelson a $1,000 birdie prop bet. He declined in a humorous way. Check it out:

Mickelson replied with a wide smile, “I would, but I’m not one to take risks.” This version of Phil Mickelson is definitely different from the one you’re used to seeing.

It appears that this has become a common response for Mickelson, as he apparently said the same thing to another fan at the LIV Bedminster event last summer. It’s commendable that Phil is practicing what he preaches. Given that the six-time major champion shot rounds of 74 and 72 to miss the cut at Valhalla, a simple birdie bet wouldn’t have been a wise decision.
