Ian Poulter and Phil Mickelson appeared to be shoe-ins as future Ryder Cup captains for their respective teams, but the former believes they will never get the chance.
Ian Poulter is of the opinion that neither he nor Phil Mickelson will ever have the opportunity to compete against each other as Ryder Cup captains in the future due to their decision to join LIV Golf.
Poulter cemented his status as a European Ryder Cup icon over the years, but decided to forego the opportunity to compete for Team Europe last Spring by stepping down from his DP World Tour membership. He had some memorable showdowns with his American counterpart Mickelson on the Ryder Cup platform, who has also opted for the Saudi move.
It seemed certain that both Poulter and Mickelson would eventually lead their teams as captains in the prestigious matchplay event, but the Englishman now believes this may not happen.
Mickelson utilized social media on Wednesday to address his future plans after retiring from professional golf. While a fan proposed that he should pursue a career in commentating, the captain of the HyFlyers expressed his interest in engaging in one-off matches with amateur players, all while being filmed.
The individual expressed gratitude for the kind remarks. Nevertheless, the fact that someone possesses the ability to perform a certain task does not necessarily imply that they should engage in it. In lieu of providing commentary, the person intends to partake in Pros vs Schmos 9 hole matches and offer insights along the way, while also engaging in playful banter. Although the video may not be of the utmost quality, it is anticipated to be an enjoyable experience for both the individual and the viewers.
Sure, Poulter is eager to challenge Mickelson in a potential new project after letting go of the idea of a Ryder Cup reunion. “I’m willing to play the role of the Schmos,” the European player stated. “We could have been rival Ryder Cup Captains, but that won’t be happening anymore.
“Pick the location and time, and I’ll bring the [camera]. I’m fully committed. Just make sure to hide those calf muscles. Only tartan trousers allowed.”
It appears that the six-time major champion is eager to accept the offer, as Mickelson responded: “I am ready to proceed.”
Poulter had previously acknowledged that his days of playing for Europe were finished, revealing the contentious issues surrounding the LIV setup and the Ryder Cup. “I have concluded my time playing in the Ryder Cup; I am no longer eligible. At 48 years old, I would be 49 by the time the next edition takes place,” he shared with Gulf News in March.
Last time was overwhelming with everything that occurred and was said. It’s really disheartening for me to see how certain individuals were treated and talked about in relation to the Ryder Cup, especially considering the dedication and hard work they’ve put into that product.
As it stands, with the current individuals in charge at that level of the organization, there would need to be some changes for me to participate… I wasn’t necessary last time – some individuals even mentioned that we weren’t required.
