Scottie Scheffler is not the sole top-10 player in the world who will be absent from the Wells Fargo Championship this week.
Ludvig Åberg, the 24-year-old Swedish golfer who currently holds the sixth position in the Official World Golf Ranking, shared on Monday that he had encountered a knee injury and had to withdraw from the prestigious event at Quail Hollow Club, scheduled to commence on Thursday.
Expressing his disappointment, Åberg stated, “I was really looking forward to participating in Quail Hollow for the first time. Regrettably, I am facing a knee problem and upon consulting with my doctors, we have concluded that it would be best for me to take some extra time off to recover.”
Åberg, without specifying which knee, mentioned that he remains eager to participate in the upcoming PGA Championship. In his previous major tournament, the Masters, he achieved the runner-up position, marking his first career major start. Following that, he took a break from playing and returned with a commendable T-10 finish at the RBC Heritage the following week.
Due to Åberg’s withdrawal from the Wells Fargo tournament, Peter Malnati has been selected as his replacement through the Aon Next 10 program, ensuring that the field remains comprised of 69 players.
