Former Detroit Lions veteran defensive back signing with Saints

Former Detroit Lions DB Will Harris is reportedly signing a one-year deal with the Saints.

The Will Harris era in Detroit has come to an end after five seasons. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Harris has signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints.

Harris was selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 2019 draft. While he was initially considered a safety, Harris’ responsibilities expanded over time. During his tenure in Detroit, Harris showcased his versatility by playing safety, cornerback, and nickel positions, in addition to contributing significantly on special teams.

Despite starting 40 games over five seasons, Harris never solidified a permanent role with the Lions. The team consistently sought to improve upon his position, resulting in Harris primarily serving as a backup player. Nevertheless, Detroit’s coaching staff consistently commended Harris for his intelligence and strong work ethic.

Aaron Glenn, the Lions’ defensive coordinator, mentioned last season that the player in question has demonstrated versatility by playing various positions in the backend. Glenn emphasized the player’s value to the team, acknowledging that sometimes he may take the player for granted. He drew a parallel to his experience with former Saints CB P.J. Williams, highlighting the importance of having players who can step in and perform when needed, even without prior practice reps.

Harris becomes the 11th Lions player to have found a new team in free agency, with Zach Ertz (Commanders), Josh Reynolds (Broncos), Jonah Jackson (Rams), Matt Nelson (Giants), Max Pircher (Seahawks), Julian Okwara (Eagles), Benito Jones (Dolphins), Anthony Pittman (Commanders), Chase Lucas (49ers), and C.J. Gardner-Johnson (Eagles) also moving on.

It is important to mention that Harris’ move to the Saints will not affect Detroit’s compensatory pick calculation for the upcoming year. The deadline for transactions has already passed, so this signing will not be taken into account. At the moment, it is unlikely that the Lions will receive a 2025 draft pick based on free agency.
