“Frustrating, bad, confusing” – Justin Thomas rates the 2023 PGA Tour season, says he is ‘learning’ from it

Justin Thomas’ struggles in 2023 were well documented. The 2022 PGA Championship winner came into that calendar year off a pretty good one, but things really fell apart. He failed to make the playoffs and just generally did not have very many good performances. He knows it wasn’t a good year, especially by his standards.

In the second episode of ‘Swing by with Jason Kennedy’ on the PGA Tour, Thomas was requested to provide a brief summary of his 2023 season (12:43-12:56). In response, he expressed his thoughts using the following terms: “Comfortable, vexing, subpar, perplexing, educational.”

The golfer was also questioned about whether he considers 2023 to be his least accomplished season so far (13:06-13:31), and he was blunt:

“I felt like it was as an amazing opportunity for me to grow and learn a lot. And I think that I’m very lucky to have a great support system around me and a great team that just constantly reminded me to keep my head up and keep pushing and looking forward not backward. And understanding it’s always dark as before dawn. And it just I don’t know, I felt like I was very lucky for that.”

Thomas failed to secure a single triumph on the PGA Tour in 2023. However, he did manage to achieve a few notable performances, with his most impressive result being a commendable third place finish at the Hero World Challenge in the same year.

Regrettably, Thomas encountered disappointment on multiple occasions, as he missed the cut six times and finished 60th or worse on three separate occasions. With no victories to offset these subpar finishes, it becomes evident why the year proved to be incredibly frustrating for him.

It was unfortunate that Thomas was chosen to participate in the Ryder Cup, with hopes of redemption. Regrettably, the expected turnaround did not come to fruition. Despite Thomas’ commendable performance, the American team faced a resounding defeat by the Europeans at Marco Simone.

Based on the aforementioned interview, it appears that Thomas is maintaining a positive outlook on the situation. Despite experiencing his most challenging year in professional golf, “JT” is using it as a valuable learning experience to strive for improvement in the days ahead.

How is Justin Thomas doing in 2024?

It’s safe to say that Justin Thomas is having a rollercoaster season in 2024. While he has shown some impressive performances with two top-10 finishes, it’s worth noting that he had twice as many last year. On the flip side, he has also experienced three missed cuts, which is equal to half of his total from the previous year.

Justin started the season on a high note, securing a remarkable T3 finish at the American Express with an outstanding score of 27 under par. He continued to showcase his skills by placing T6 at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

It appeared that he had made a positive turnaround with a respectable T12 finish at the WM Phoenix Open. However, his performance took a dip as he failed to make the cut at the Genesis Invitational and two other events, only managing a T64 finish in one of them.

Furthermore, he narrowly missed the cut at the Masters after shooting seven over par in two rounds. It’s safe to say that he is currently not in the best form.
