Scottie Scheffler has already made his mind up on walking out on final round at the Masters

The 54-hole leader has a private jet on standby to fly home if his wife Meredith goes into labour with their first child.

If his wife Meredith goes into labor during the final round, Scottie Scheffler, the current leader in the Masters, is prepared to return to Dallas on Sunday.

The current top-ranked player is the clear favorite to secure his second title here, holding a one-shot lead going into the final day. He is set to play alongside his US Ryder Cup teammate Collin Morikawa at 2.35pm local time (7.35pm GMT).

In the past decade, there has been only a single instance where a Masters champion emerged from a group other than the final one. This trend continued in 2022, with Scheffler leading the pack heading into the last round. However, despite his position, the dedicated Christian golfer has made it clear that he won’t even begin the final round if his childhood sweetheart contacts him to rush home for the arrival of their first baby. It’s worth noting that mobile phones are strictly prohibited at Augusta National, the venue for the tournament.

The top-ranked individual stated that they possess a method to swiftly return to their residence. There is an individual present who possesses the means to contact them via their mobile device, if it is permissible. Furthermore, they confirm their readiness to depart for home whenever necessary. As for the likelihood of receiving a call, they express a strong expectation for it to occur.

Meredith Scheffler was instrumental in her husband’s inaugural victory at the Masters tournament two years prior. Despite holding the 54-hole lead, the Ryder Cup standout succumbed to pre-round jitters, leading to an emotional breakdown.

His spouse assured him, “Even if you emerge victorious in this golf tournament today, even if you suffer a defeat by a margin of 10 shots, even if you never triumph in another golf tournament again, my love for you will remain unwavering. You will always be the same person, and remember that Jesus loves you unconditionally, regardless of any outcome.”

Scheffler is rooming with Sam Burns this year, who is also expecting a child with his wife Caroline. Despite missing the cut and heading home, Scheffler will have his closest friends staying at his house this weekend.

“The Players champion mentioned that there will be a slight variation in the upcoming plans. To avoid being alone at home, the champion decided to invite a few friends who were in town to stay with them. Consequently, the house now accommodates a couple of close buddies, forming a familiar group that has been together in the Bahamas for the past few years. This morning, they gathered at the house, prepared breakfast, and spent some quality time together before the champion headed to the course. Tomorrow, they anticipate a similar routine, with plans to contact Mer, unwind, and enjoy a leisurely day.”

I wasn’t keen on spending the weekend alone at home. It didn’t sound too thrilling to me. I’d much prefer to have some friends over. I’ll kick back, give Meredith a call, chill with them, watch TV, and have a blast. Maybe we’ll order some food, hang out, or even play some cards. Who knows what we’ll end up doing. Let’s just wait and see.

In the past 27 editions of this tournament, the eventual champions have consistently begun the final round within a four-shot range of the lead. This year, the contenders in close pursuit include Americans Morikawa, Max Homa, and Bryson DeChambeau, as well as Ludvig Aberg.

The Swede, together with Dane Hojgaard who is trailing by five shots, is aiming to become the first newcomer to win here since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979. Aberg shared, “It’s always on my mind. I’m comfortable with that. As a competitor, I have a strong desire to win tournaments. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be in this position and have the opportunity to play golf here. I believe we shouldn’t avoid it. We shouldn’t try to ignore it. Instead, I choose to embrace it and accept everything that comes with it.”
