Tiger Woods returned to the Masters this year and on Friday broke the record for most cuts made in a row – but it wasn’t easy for the five-time green jacket winner.
Tiger Woods found himself on the 18th green of Augusta National on Friday afternoon, after enduring the most demanding 23 holes of golf.
His body would not have experienced anything like that in a long time.
Woods, along with numerous other players, had to complete his first round on Friday morning due to storms disrupting tee times the day before at Augusta. The weather took a turn for the worse on the second day, with strong winds wreaking havoc and causing chaos at Augusta National. Rory McIlroy’s round lasted six hours, with shots being lost all around the course. It was a tough day for everyone.
Woods arguably emerged as the victor, having teed off earlier, yet the challenge of traversing and engaging in 23 holes remained an immense demand on his physical well-being. In addition to being 48 years old, he has undergone back fusion surgery, ankle fusion surgery, and narrowly escaped losing a leg in a car accident in 2021.
His gait appears mechanical as he walks, his movements constrained when he bends over, and his countenance conceals the agony he endures on a daily basis, as he himself reveals.
Being 1-over for the tournament while standing on the 18th green is not just an amazing accomplishment, it’s almost like witnessing a miracle. Woods didn’t have to sink the putt to secure his spot and set a record, he could have easily taken two or three more shots. However, Woods definitely didn’t want to lose another stroke by missing the par. Absolutely not!
As he prepared to putt the four-footer, the weather added an extra layer of absurdity to the situation. On three occasions, gusts of wind blew sand out of the bunkers near the green. Each time, Woods had to momentarily pause and shield his face. And on three separate occasions, Woods had to gather his composure amidst this comical display of springtime antics.
Finally, the wind shifted momentarily from a gust to a gentle breeze, allowing Woods to confidently take his putt. He flawlessly sank it, as expected. Consequently, he finished the round with a score of 1-over, successfully making the cut and surpassing the Masters record by reaching the third round for an impressive 24 consecutive times.
Woods hasn’t completed a full four rounds of competitive golf in over a year. His sole tournament in 2024 resulted in him withdrawing. So you might wonder, how is he still standing there, confidently sinking his putt?
Tiger Woods, a 15-time major winner, is the individual we are discussing. He is a champion who triumphed over a terrible car accident to win the Masters. He has expressed his deep passion for golf.
Despite his challenging performance on Saturday, and regardless of the outcome of this year’s Masters, he will never receive adequate recognition – let alone a trophy – for the truly remarkable accomplishment he accomplished on Friday.
