Zach Johnson swore at Masters spectators on day two at Augusta after they cheered a triple bogey prompting the former Team USA Ryder Cup captain to lose his cool.
During the second round of the Masters, Zach Johnson, the ex-Ryder Cup captain, expressed his frustration by using inappropriate language towards the spectators who had cheered his triple bogey.
Johnson faced difficulties on the twelfth hole, a par-three, resulting in a score of six. Observers at Augusta National seemed to respond with a hint of sarcasm as they cheered when he eventually made his putt.
Johnson was visibly upset by their actions and expressed his frustration with a profanity-laden outburst that was captured on the Amen Corner feed of the tournament’s website. This unfortunate incident occurred after Johnson’s triple bogey, which significantly impacted his overall score for the tournament and essentially dashed his chances of advancing further.
It has been a challenging period for Johnson, as he faced intense scrutiny following his role as captain in Team USA’s devastating loss to Team Europe in the Ryder Cup last year. This recent outburst marks the second occasion this season where the 48-year-old has confronted fans in a similar manner.
During the concluding day of the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, he was captured on camera engaging with spectators and expressing his frustration by stating “I’ve had enough” and urging them to “simply be quiet”. The tournament has gained a reputation for its boisterous conduct exhibited by fans, leading to Johnson being questioned about whether he believed the fans had “overstepped boundaries”.
In reply, he queried, “If they did overstep boundaries this week, where exactly are those boundaries? I’m posing a question to you.” The journalist further inquired if he deemed the incidents as “inappropriate”.
Johnson responded by stating, “Throughout my 21 years on tour, I have found this tournament to be inappropriate and crossing the line. However, I continue to come back because I have the choice to play or not. The main reason I return to Phoenix is because I actually enjoy the golf course, especially the greens.
Typically, I try to avoid playing on the West Coast, but the overseeded Bermuda greens here suit my preferences. Normally, they provide a nice bounce and allow me to get loft in my shots, but due to the wet conditions this week, it was a bit different.”
He mentioned that he is uncertain about the exact threshold, but there are instances where individuals are tumbling from the upper sections and altercations are occurring among spectators. The situation has escalated to a degree where it is challenging to regain control. It has become an entity of its own, and in my opinion, the Thunderbirds should take action to address it.
I presume that they feel a sense of shame because sooner or later, someone will sustain severe injuries or even worse. There was an incident where a lady fell from a height of 20 feet.
Johnson expressed his emotions openly, stating that he was completely finished with the situation. He added, “I’m not sure if I’ll return or not. It’s up to the team, and my wife.”
“I’m feeling very emotional at the moment, so if you ask me if I’ll be back, my answer would likely be no. However, I’m not certain. After playing 54 holes in just two days, I’m exhausted and completely drained. I’ve had enough. I’m done. I’m done with all of it.”
