The Englishman has a 24 degree 9-wood in the bag for Augusta to fill the gap between 5-wood and 4-iron.
Tommy Fleetwood, a skilled English golfer known for his exceptional ball striking abilities, has embraced the resurgence of higher lofted woods on the professional tour.
In his pursuit of securing his first Major title at The Masters this week, Fleetwood has opted to include a 9-wood in his arsenal. This particular club, a TaylorMade Qi10 fairway wood, boasts a loft of 24 degrees, providing Fleetwood with the necessary versatility and precision to excel on the course.
Fleetwood, who is accompanied by a seasoned Augusta caddie this week as his regular caddie Ian Finnis is recovering from a chest infection, mentions that he is using a 9-wood to bridge the distance between his 5-wood and 4-iron.
By replacing his 3-iron, he will be able to execute higher shots that can come to a halt more swiftly on the smooth, sloping greens of Augusta National.
According to his equipment sponsor TaylorMade, the golfer mentioned that there is always a delicate balance on courses with thick rough, firm greens, and firm fairways. It is important to have a club that allows for accurate drives down the fairway, while also being able to hit into greens or out of the rough.
In order to achieve this, he decided to increase the loft in his woods. He specifically avoided using hybrids and found that the numbers produced by a 7-wood were too similar to his 5-wood. As a solution, he added a 9-wood to bridge the gap between his 5-wood, which reaches 250 yards, and his 4-iron, which reaches 225 yards. This adjustment in his club selection allows him to have more versatility on the course.
In January’s Dubai Desert Classic, the player ranked 13th in the world used a 9-wood and finished T14th after winning the Dubai Invitational the week before.
Additionally, he carries a Qi10 driver, BRNR Mini driver, Qi10 5-wood, P7TW irons, and a TP5x pix Season Opener with peaches to honor Georgia, the ‘Peach State’.
Dustin Johnson, the winner of the 2020 Masters tournament, is also carrying TaylorMade Stealth 7-and-9-woods in his golf bag for this week’s competition.
He has participated in eight tournaments this year, successfully making the cut in seven of them and achieving two additional top-10 finishes in addition to his triumph. This week marks his eighth appearance in the Masters, with his highest placement being T14 in 2022.
I’m really glad I got the chance to play last week. I feel like I faced some challenges during the Florida swing, but it was a valuable learning experience for me,” he mentioned.
“After taking a two-week break and practicing diligently, I believe participating in the tournament last week was a wise decision. It helped boost my confidence significantly. Although performing well in practice doesn’t always guarantee success, I’m excited to hit the course and give it my all now.”
