Rory McIlroy and wife Erica Stoll sparked a lasting romance after years of friendship.
The professional golfer first encountered Stoll in 2012 when he was still in a relationship with tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. (The former couple ended their relationship in 2014 after three years and had a short engagement.)
I adore the fact that we were friends first before anything romantic blossomed,” McIlroy excitedly shared with the Irish Independent in January 2017, explaining what sets his relationship with Stoll apart. “We crossed paths when she was employed by the PGA of America and leasing a condo in Palm Beach, and I appreciated being with someone leading a down-to-earth life instead of constantly dealing with luxury and extravagance.”
The couple became engaged in the romantic city of Paris in December 2015. Their wedding took place in 2017 at a majestic castle located in McIlroy’s home country. It was rumored that several high-profile individuals, including Jamie Dornan from the movie “50 Shades of Grey” and Chris Martin from the band Coldplay, attended the ceremony. Following their marriage, the pair has chosen to keep their personal lives private, with Stoll maintaining a low-profile on social media by setting her Instagram account to private.
McIlroy kept their pregnancy a secret until just before his wife gave birth in August 2020, making them a very private couple. He shared the news with close friends and family, but didn’t feel the need to make a public announcement. However, he couldn’t contain his excitement and expressed his anticipation for their daughter’s arrival.
McIlroy announced daughter Poppy’s birth via Instagram in September 2020.
