Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and JT called out for not supporting Rory McIlroy

Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee has criticised the leading American PGA Tour stars for not supporting Rory McIlroy over LIV Golf matters.

Brandel Chamblee, a Golf Channel analyst, has expressed disappointment in top American golfers Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, and Justin Thomas for not standing by Rory McIlroy during the PGA Tour’s conflict with LIV Golf.

Chamblee expressed his views during a remarkable interview with Golfweek, where he highlighted the significant role played by Tiger Woods’ agent in the ongoing conflict within the golf community. Additionally, he reiterated his animosity towards Phil Mickelson, who is considered a prominent figure in LIV.

McIlroy was once at the forefront of opposing the breakaway tour, urging golfers to carefully consider their decision before joining the highly profitable LIV Golf League.

However, the peace agreement on 6 June 2023 with LIV’s supporters seemed to trigger a significant transformation in McIlroy’s stance, leading him to distance himself from the off-course disputes.

Chamblee, aged 61, argues that McIlroy did not receive the necessary support.

Chamblee stated to the publication that he wouldn’t go to the extent of claiming that players were self-centered.

However, it seemed to me that Rory was actively opposing the source of funding for LIV and was a significant asset for the PGA Tour. Unfortunately, he did not receive any support from the other players.

I did not come across any vocal support from Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, or Xander Schauffele for Rory.

Rory’s voice resonated with a level of conviction that surpassed any of the others, making it impossible for me to ignore his stance on the matter.

He seemed to be bearing the brunt of the heat, if not all of it, and I believe that eventually, although I cannot confirm this as I haven’t spoken to Rory, he reached a point where he thought, “I have done everything within my power, yet I am not receiving any assistance. Why am I the only one expected to wage this entire battle on my own?” Consequently, he decided to step back.

McIlroy stepped down from the policy board in November of last year. At first, he mentioned that he had an overwhelming amount of things happening in his life. “I had to make a tough decision,” McIlroy shared with BBC Sport.

However, a subsequent image surfaced depicting McIlroy’s mounting exasperation due to his lack of influence.

“I felt as though I was constantly met with resistance,” McIlroy expressed when he elaborated on his choice to resign from the board.

McIlroy was said to be advocating for the PGA Tour to quickly reach an agreement with the supporters of LIV Golf.

Additionally, he seemed to suggest that players transitioning from LIV back to the traditional Tour should not face monetary consequences.

“It’s hard to punish people,” McIlroy said.

Scheffler, in particular, seems to have a different opinion than McIlroy. The top-ranked player expressed his desire for a “caveat” regarding any potential LIV returns.

Chamblee also mentioned that he would have appreciated more players speaking up in support of the PGA Tour and the traditions of the game. He believes that the direction the game has taken in recent years has been detrimental to professional golf.

They have experienced significant financial success, however, they are distancing themselves from the primary stakeholder in the golf industry, the loyal fan base.
