The PGA Tour saw a tense moment at the Texas Children’s Houston Open as Tony Finau and Alejandro Tosti clashing over who would putt first after minutes of debate.
During the Texas Children’s Houston Open, Tony Finau found himself embroiled in a frosty disagreement with PGA Tour newcomer Alejandro Tosti.
The dispute arose from their conflicting desires to putt first and gain an advantage in terms of line and speed. After a tense standoff and a deliberation that lasted over three minutes, Tosti eventually took the initiative to putt, but only after persuading his opponent Finau to relocate his marker. This incident was deemed quite extraordinary by NBC analyst Steve Sands, prompting the introduction of PGA Tour rules official Mark Dusbabek to shed light on the protracted discussion during The Golf Channel broadcast.
Finau and Tosti both made their putts on the par-4 4th hole and ended up with two-putt pars. However, a similar situation occurred again on the par-4 6th hole. Finau, being closer to the hole, exercised his right to have Tosti shoot first.
“The tension between Finau and Tosti is palpable,” stated on-course announcer John Wood. “Once again, they found themselves in a situation where they had to determine who was away. Tony simply pointed at Tosti and walked away. Tosti responded with a smile that seemed to convey, ‘Are you serious?’ The atmosphere between them is completely icy and uncomfortable. The tension is undeniable.”
Wood stated, “Returning to the 5th hole following their initial clash on the 4th, when Tosti sank that birdie putt, he was in close proximity to Tony and displayed two enthusiastic fist pumps. Their relationship seems strained.”
The PGA Tour controversy is not new to Tosti, who secured his tour card last season through the Korn Ferry Tour. Tosti was controversially removed from the KFT’s Boise Open after the first round by the PGA Tour due to a “disciplinary issue.”
At the midpoint of the tournament in Houston, Finau found himself leading by a margin of two shots. Nevertheless, he has now slipped down to a tie for ninth place. He now faces tough competition from the world’s top-ranked player, Scottie Scheffler. “I managed to execute some impressive shots, although my success mainly stemmed from sinking long-distance putts,” Finau remarked prior to his disappointing performance.
“On the eighth hole, I made an exceptional chip shot for an eagle. Suddenly, I realized I was eight under par. It’s remarkable how unpredictable this sport can be, but it’s important not to get too caught up in future outcomes.”
On Sunday, Scheffler finds himself in a tie for first place. The 27-year-old has recently won both the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship in consecutive fashion.
Meanwhile, Stephan Jäger, Thomas Detry, and David Skinns are also currently tied with the world No. 1 as the competition continues in Houston.
