Jordan wants to see ‘more fight’ and ‘viciousness’ from Norris

Lando Norris is establishing himself as a regular podium finisher in Formula 1, however, Eddie Jordan suggests that the young McLaren driver must adjust his mindset in order to close the gap and achieve victory.

Last weekend in Australia, Norris secured his fourteenth career podium in F1, a milestone that placed him in the sport’s less desirable records as the driver with the most podium finishes without a victory, a title previously held by Nick Heidfeld.

On two separate instances previously, Norris narrowly missed out on achieving glory. In 2021, he came excruciatingly close on two occasions, with one being a second-place finish following teammate Daniel Ricciardo at the Italian Grand Prix.

However, the most heart-wrenching moment occurred in Russia that year when Norris led a substantial part of the race in Sochi, only to miscalculate a switch to the intermediate tire due to the changing weather conditions, ultimately handing the victory to Lewis Hamilton.

During a conversation with David Coulthard on their ‘Formula for Success’ podcast, Jordan emphasized Norris’ undeniable talent and widespread appeal. However, Jordan also expressed the belief that the McLaren driver would benefit from adopting a more assertive racing mentality in order to truly establish himself as a legitimate Grand Prix victor.

“He is highly respected, isn’t he? He is adored. He possesses an attractive appearance. His parents are exceptionally attractive individuals. He embodies all the qualities that any father would desire in their son,” remarked Jordan.

He becomes a truly remarkable individual, displaying exceptional discipline, extensive knowledge, and a strong sense of his position. However, I yearn for a greater display of tenacity. I crave a heightened level of aggression and ferocity.

Is it possible that he could have emerged victorious in any of those 14 Grands Prix? Perhaps he could have secured victory in one or even two of them. Yet, what I truly desire is an intensified level of engagement, a genuine battle, and an unwavering resolve. Once he attains that level of intensity…

Nigel Mansell’s standout feature was his unwavering belief that he could defeat anyone, regardless of their talent. Despite not excelling in certain areas as some of his competitors, his strong mental game made him unbeatable.

“I hope to witness a similar level of wild belief, commitment, and passion in Lando. It wouldn’t be surprising if he becomes the next British world champion, given his exceptional skills.”

Jordan also cautioned that Norris must remain vigilant, as his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri is making significant progress.

“He must be cautious, as Oscar is definitely not to be underestimated,” he emphasized.

I am extremely impressed by his performance in his second season. As you are aware, David, the second season in Formula 1 is often a significant transition, as you leave behind the party atmosphere and enter the intense competition.

It requires exceptional performance, and Oscar is certainly delivering on that front.
