Sergio Garcia teases Ryder Cup return with LIV Golf decision expected soon

Sergio Garcia, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are waiting for news on their eligibility for the 2025 Ryder Cup, with the LIV Golf stars in danger of missing out at Bethpage.

Sergio Garcia, the prominent LIV Golf star, anticipates an update on his eligibility for the Ryder Cup in the upcoming period. The Spaniard is eager to once again represent Europe in the prestigious tournament.

At 44 years old, Garcia holds the title of Europe’s most accomplished Ryder Cup player, having secured victory six times in nine appearances. Additionally, he holds the record for the highest number of points earned, totaling 28.5 points.

However, by opting to leave the PGA Tour and DP World Tour in favor of joining the breakaway LIV Golf in 2022, he effectively eliminated himself from consideration for the 2023 Ryder Cup. In his absence, Europe emerged victorious over the Americans in Rome.

It is worth noting that in order to be eligible for Ryder Cup selection, European players must maintain active membership in the DP World Tour. Unfortunately for Garcia, his decision to join LIV resulted in fines and a suspension. Despite his unsuccessful last-minute effort to participate in Rome, where he offered to pay the £700,000 in fines he had accumulated, he was unable to secure a spot in the tournament.

A modification of regulations may be in store before the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage in New York. Captain Luke Donald may have to lead a less formidable team to the United States following Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton’s transfers to LIV before the 2024 season.

Numerous players from both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have advocated for rule adjustments to guarantee that Europe can protect its title with the most competitive team. Garcia is confident that a resolution will be reached shortly, as the matter is set to be discussed during a Ryder Cup advisory board meeting on Thursday.

Garcia expressed his sentiments by stating, “I view the situation from two perspectives. If I am no longer able to play, it will be a bit disheartening. However, I also reflect on the numerous times I have played and the success I have achieved both individually and as part of a team. That is what I choose to focus on.”

He further added, “I am hopeful that things will eventually stabilize, and we will have a clearer picture of where we stand. I hope that we are all given the opportunity to participate again if we are performing well. The future will reveal how this unfolds.”

Garcia’s compatriot Rahm proved to be a significant figure for Europe at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in October, playing a crucial role in Europe’s triumphant return of the prestigious trophy. As doubts loom over Rahm’s participation in the 2025 Ryder Cup, currently underway, he firmly believes that it would be unwise for Europe to disregard the immense value of their most accomplished player in the history of the tournament.

“I believe it would be imprudent for anyone to underestimate Sergio García’s wealth of experience in the Ryder Cup,” Rahm expressed prior to the victory in Rome. “He is undeniably Europe’s finest player, having accumulated the highest number of points and consistently proving his worth time and time again.”

If he could serve as a vice-captain, I would definitely rely on him. Just like we’ll be counting on [Jose Maria Olazabal] in the upcoming Ryder Cup, right?
