Piastri ‘fortunate’ not to be punished further for qualifying mistakes

The Melbourne native will start his home Grand Prix from fifth on the grid, having qualified sixth before Sergio Perez’s penalty.

Oscar Piastri has acknowledged his errors during the Australian Grand Prix qualifying session, considering himself lucky to have not ended up further back on the starting grid.

Despite finishing sixth at Albert Park, he was able to move up to fifth position following Sergio Perez’s penalty for impeding Nico Hulkenberg.

Piastri and Lando Norris both showed strong performances during qualifying, with Piastri slightly edging ahead in the first two segments.

Despite this, Norris managed to gain almost two-tenths on Piastri in Q3, leaving the Melbourne-native feeling disappointed due to inadequate out-lap preparation.

Piastri owns up

Piastri informed the media that the weekend has been quite successful thus far. While Q1 and Q2 showed promising performance, Q3 proved to be challenging due to my numerous mistakes.

These errors played a significant role in determining my current position. Additionally, there were certain aspects of our preparation that could have been improved, including my out-lap preparation.

There were numerous errors that occurred at a crucial moment, and luckily, I am not positioned too far behind – it’s not a disastrous outcome, but it’s a little disheartening.

The vehicles surrounding us appear to be formidable, so in order to surpass Red Bull or Ferrari, we’ll have to discover an additional edge or rely on a stroke of luck.

If we can maintain our position and not fall behind, it would be a positive outcome for us. We will give our best to achieve that goal.

Currently, we are in an optimistic position, and it’s a significant improvement for us. We seem to have gained some speed compared to Mercedes and Aston, which is a better performance than last year.
