Rory McIlroy will compete in the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event for the first time.
According to his official website, Rory McIlroy will be participating in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event for the very first time in his PGA Tour career from 25-28 April.
By choosing to tee it up at TPC Louisiana, McIlroy will now be engaging in three out of four weeks of competition on the PGA Tour.
The Valero Texas Open, scheduled from 4-7 April, will be the stage where the 34-year-old golfer will showcase his skills before venturing into The Masters. From 11-14 April, he will strive to achieve the remarkable feat of completing the career grand slam.
Historically, McIlroy has consistently opted to take the week preceding The Masters as a break, allowing him to optimize his preparation for the prestigious tournament.
In preparation for the 2024 Masters, McIlroy has chosen to switch things up by gaining some competitive experience before aiming to wear the iconic green jacket for the very first time.
The prize money for the 2024 Masters will be announced at the beginning of the week, with predictions pointing towards it being on par with last year’s $18m, where Jon Rahm took home $3.24m.
McIlroy’s confirmed April schedule
4-7: Valero Texas Open
11-14: The Masters
25-28: Zurich Classic of New Orleans
McIlroy’s official website has not yet confirmed whether he will be participating in the upcoming RBC Heritage, which is a Signature Event on the PGA Tour’s schedule from 18-21 April.
It would be quite surprising if he chooses not to compete at Hilton Head, considering the tournament’s elevated status and the PGA Tour’s expectation for top players to participate in these prestigious events.
The RBC Heritage boasts an impressive prize purse of $20 million, and the victorious participant will be awarded a substantial check amounting to $3.6 million.
Rory McIlroy violated a key PGA Tour rule by pulling out of the 2023 RBC Heritage before the tournament.
However, it was later revealed that McIlroy had decided to withdraw from the tournament for the sake of his emotional and mental health.
Following this, the World No.2 is set to participate in his inaugural Zurich Classic of New Orleans, taking place from 25-28 April.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans stands as the only team event featured on the PGA Tour schedule.
Previously, it was an individual event, but it underwent a transition into a team event starting in 2017.
Each team is made up of two players, with the competition consisting of two rounds of fourballs and two rounds of foursomes.
There is growing speculation about McIlroy’s choice of partner for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Shane Lowry of Ireland seems to be a formidable candidate for the position, especially among McIlroy enthusiasts on social media.
Additionally, Rickie Fowler’s name has been circulating as a potential partner for McIlroy.
There is no question that a resolution will be reached in the near future.
Despite McIlroy’s strong performance at the Dubai Desert Classic in January, where he successfully defended his title, he has encountered some difficulties on the PGA Tour. Out of his five appearances on the circuit, he has only managed to secure one top-20 finish, specifically T19 at The Players.
