Angel Cabrera denied visa to attend the Masters following time in prison for domestic violence

Two-time major winner spent 30 months in prison but was released last year and has resumed his golf career.

Angel Cabrera, a past champion, will not be attending the upcoming Masters at Augusta National as he was unable to obtain a visa to enter the United States due to his previous incarceration for domestic violence.

Released last August after over two years in prison, he was most recently held at Monte Cristo, a minimum security facility near his hometown of Cordoba in Argentina.

Cabrera, a two-time major winner, wasted no time in expressing his desire to make a comeback to competitive golf despite his past transgressions. He recently participated in a US Seniors Tour event in Morocco, finishing in 27th place.

His next goal is to compete at Augusta, where the club’s chairman, Fred Ridley, has confirmed that he will be welcomed at the Champion’s Dinner and during the tournament itself.

Ridley expressed his admiration for Angel, highlighting him as one of our esteemed champions. It’s unfortunate that he hasn’t been able to compete in the Masters for the past few years due to legal matters.

Currently, he faces difficulties entering the United States as he doesn’t possess a visa. However, we sincerely hope for his success in resolving these legal issues. If he manages to do so, we will warmly welcome him back to the tournament.

At the National, there would have undoubtedly been a collective gasp when the authorities rejected his application. Manuel Tagle, Cabrera’s agent of many years, informed Golfweek on Wednesday that he would not be participating in The Masters. The final decision regarding his visa will require a minimum of 8 to 10 weeks.

Cabrera’s legal issues trace back to 2016. Over the course of approximately four years, his ex-wife Silva Rivadero accused him of physical assault and verbal threats, while two ex-girlfriends, Micaela Escudero and Cecilia Torres Mana, alleged domestic violence and verbal and physical abuse, respectively. As a result, Cabrera was apprehended by the police and later released on bail, pending his court appearance.

In August 2020, Cabrera made a trip to the Senior Players Championship in Akron, Ohio, without informing the authorities. As a result, a Red Notice was issued by Interpol, leading to his arrest in Brazil in January 2021. Following his arrest, Cabrera spent close to five months in the infamous Plácido de Sá Carvalho prison in Rio before being extradited back to Argentina.

However, as of now, Tiger Woods, who has won the championship five times, is included in the list of 85 players participating, but he has not made an official commitment yet.
