TGL’s roof collapse has inspired major changes

At this point in 2024, we were supposed to see a lot of TGL, the mixed-reality golf league headed up by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. We were supposed to be entering Week 9 of the season schedule, with matches taking place on Monday and Tuesday nights. The playoffs of TGL’s first season would be coming up. Tiger Woods would be playing a lot more public golf.

Then Mother Nature happened.

A mid-November storm in southern Florida left a lasting impression on golf fans. The storm brought strong winds and heavy rain, causing significant damage to Sofi Arena, the league’s future home. Unfortunately, the arena’s cloth dome roof was no match for the relentless weather, and it was torn apart. The images of the arena’s skeleton quickly spread across the internet, leading to the inevitable decision to postpone the first season by a full year.

The TGL has made headlines once again, three months after their initial decision, by announcing a significant alteration. As revealed by the Sports Business Journal, the TGL will introduce a new arena next season, featuring “insulated steel walls and a steel-supported roof.” This upgraded design is expected to be even more robust, capable of enduring a Category 5 hurricane, whereas the previous design was only equipped to withstand a Category 4 storm.

Due to the location of the arena on Palm Beach State College’s campus, modifications to the initial blueprints have been proposed to the college’s board of trustees. According to one of the illustrations displayed during the presentation in late February, the updated arena blueprint features a roof that is slightly lower than the dome, yet boasts a broader frame.

A representative from TMRW Sports provided the subsequent declaration:

TMRW Sports is grateful for the chance to share an update on the enhanced venue construction plan featuring upgraded design elements and materials. The College is diligently fulfilling their responsibilities by posing relevant inquiries as part of the standard due diligence process.

The goal is to establish a venue that will be cherished by the College, Palm Beach communities, fans, and partners for many years. We value our extensive partnership with Palm Beach State College and their willingness to set a special March meeting date in addition to their regular meeting on April 16.
