Brandel Chamblee brutally tears into Jon Rahm and LIV Golf with comical ‘sideshow’ dig

Outspoken LIV Golf critic Brandel Chamblee has slammed Jon Rahm for his move to the breakaway tour, saying the two-time major champion has signed a “Faustian pact”.

Brandel Chamblee, a well-known pundit, has criticized Jon Rahm for allegedly sacrificing his integrity by joining LIV Golf, which he described as a mere sideshow in the world of golf.

According to the NBC broadcaster, Rahm and his fellow LIV Golf members have made a deal that compromises their independence as PGA Tour members in exchange for financial gain from Saudi Arabia. Rahm, a two-time major champion, reportedly signed a lucrative contract worth around £400 million with the breakaway tour in December, making him one of the highest-profile signings since the league’s inception in 2022.

LIV Golf is financially backed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) and has secured agreements with top players such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Brooks Koepka by offering substantial financial incentives and large prize funds at its tournaments. Chamblee’s outspoken criticism of LIV Golf and its impact on the sport has made him a controversial figure in the ongoing debate surrounding the league’s role in the golfing world.

Chamblee, aged 61, opines that Rahm’s stature as one of golf’s dominant forces has diminished ever since he turned his back on the PGA Tour and embraced a role akin to that of a “vaudeville act” – a comical theatrical performance that was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s in the United States.

During a conversation with former PGA Tour star Scott Verplank on his podcast, Chamblee suggests that Rahm is aware of his compromised position. The outspoken commentator remarks, “The music was blaring, he was wearing shorts, and he became quite irritable when someone took a picture of him mid-swing.”

“In that moment, it struck me. It truly struck me… and I realized that this individual went from having a prominent role in The Godfather to now being a mere sideshow in a vaudeville act.”

All of these players, in my opinion, are aware that they have all entered into a Faustian agreement. Every single one of them. They have all sacrificed their independent nature. They were referred to as independent contractors when they played on the PGA Tour.

When they were independent, they had the freedom to go wherever they pleased, participate in any tour they desired, play at their own convenience, and had the liberty to skip any event they wished. They were essentially able to express themselves and act in any way they saw fit. However, that is no longer the case.

Rahm recently made his debut in the LIV tournament last month in Mexico, achieving third, eighth, and fifth place finishes in his three appearances thus far. Despite being the reigning Masters champion, he had previously stated his commitment to remain with the PGA Tour and showed no interest in joining LIV.

However, his bold decision to join the breakaway tour in December marked a significant turning point in the ongoing competition between the rival leagues. This move dealt a major blow to the PGA Tour and raised concerns about the potential departure of players to LIV in the upcoming months.

Last month, Rahm elaborated on his choice, stating, “I don’t want to overlook this point because it holds great significance. There has been a substantial change in the way golfers are financially rewarded. I would be dishonest if I didn’t acknowledge that this played a significant role in my decision.” He further explained, “In essence, I am being offered higher compensation to participate in the same sport while also having more flexibility with my time. Personally, that sounds very appealing to me.”

Additionally, Rahm mentioned that the ongoing framework agreement between the PGA Tour and PIF, which was announced last summer but remains unfinished, also influenced his decision to join LIV.
