Jon Rahm gets real on Tiger Woods’ ghosting, LIV Golf money “sounds great to me”

Rahm joined ESPN’s Marty Smith to explain what factors led to his decision to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf.

Jon Rahm, the current Masters champion, recently engaged in a conversation with ESPN’s Marty Smith to reflect on the events of the past year. The third-ranked golfer in the world touched upon various topics, such as his experience of being ignored by Tiger Woods, his reasons for joining LIV Golf, and much more.

The term “ghosted” typically describes the act of abruptly cutting off all communication in a relationship without explanation. While many individuals prefer not to disclose when they have been ghosted, Rahm found himself unable to avoid the topic when asked about his interactions with Woods.

When questioned about whether he had been in contact with Woods, Rahm responded, “Tiger? Not really… I reached out to Tiger and others during the signing process.” He further added, “I simply informed him, ‘Hey, this is a personal decision. I harbor no ill will towards anyone.'”

Rahm refrained from providing any additional information regarding Woods, but he informed Smith that Rory McIlroy has been offering both public and private support.

The stance of the Northern Irishman towards LIV Golf has shifted in recent months, although not everyone shares the same perspective.

As a member of the PGA Tour Policy Board, Woods plays a role in shaping the future of the PGA Tour. Since Rahm’s departure in December, Tiger has made limited public appearances and when questioned about his relationship with the Spaniard, he offered little insight.

During the ESPN interview, Rahm openly acknowledged that his departure was motivated by financial gain. He elaborated to Smith that the prospect of a significant change in how professional golf compensates its players was appealing to him.

He mentioned that he would not be truthful if he denied that it was a significant factor. Essentially, he emphasized that he is receiving higher compensation for playing the same sport and having more free time. He expressed his opinion that this arrangement is appealing, although he cannot speak for everyone.

The two-time major champion’s earlier statements about money not influencing his decision to stay with the PGA Tour now appear to be misguided.

“Since I made that statement, there have been some changes in circumstances,” Rahm explained when asked about his change of heart. He then pointed to the June 6th agreement, even though he had just admitted that the decision was primarily about financial gain and time.

Unsurprisingly, in response to the Saudi PIF sportswashing criticisms, he skillfully evaded the question just like any other professional golfer on the LIV Tour.

In the end, Rahm made the decision to participate in the LIV Tour. This week, he will partake in his third team event alongside Legion XIII, aiming to secure their second title of the year.
