Lando Norris asked if he regrets new McLaren contract as move to Mercedes blocked

The McLaren driver has committed his future to the constructor until the end of 2026 after renewing his deal.

Lando Norris has expressed his thoughts on his recent agreement with McLaren, which effectively prevents him from joining Mercedes as a young British driver. Despite attracting interest from both Red Bull and Mercedes last year, thanks to his impressive seven podium finishes, the 24-year-old has solidified his commitment to McLaren.

The unexpected news of Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari next year would have potentially opened up a spot at Mercedes for Norris to team up with George Russell. However, with Norris’ previous contract set to expire at the end of 2025, there was no immediate pressure for the British talent to extend his deal for an additional year.

Given the circumstances, Norris has been asked if he regrets extending his contract in light of Hamilton’s surprising decision. In response, he stated to RaceFans.net, “I am extremely content with my decision. I had the option to wait, but I chose not to. I was aware that opportunities could arise, and I am pleased with the path I have chosen.”

I was aware of the opportunities available to me last year and this year, as well as what could have occurred or is currently happening in the next few years. Therefore, I have no regrets from any perspective.

I have faith in my team and in what we have accomplished so far, as well as what we can achieve in the future. I am content with my current position.” Throughout his five seasons with McLaren, the British driver has secured 13 podium finishes, but a victory has remained elusive.

McLaren, based in Woking, came closest to challenging Red Bull in the latter part of the previous season, with Norris finishing as runner-up six times. The British driver anticipates that Red Bull and Ferrari will have faster cars than him this season, as he embarks on another season pursuing Max Verstappen.

He mentioned that they had a satisfactory car at the conclusion of the previous season and believes they have made progress in the right direction. He acknowledged that they are still far behind Red Bull and Ferrari.

He emphasized that there is a lot of work ahead to accomplish, as well as many lessons learned during testing that need to be applied before the start of the season in Bahrain next week.
