Rory McIlroy’s Former Agent Believes His Recent Public Pivot Could Signal A Move To LIV Golf

Rory McIlroy had arguably been the PGA Tour’s loudest critic of LIV Golf up until recently when Jon Rahm went to the Saudi-backed tour and Rory began changing his tune.

At the beginning of the year, Rory McIlroy admitted, “I may have been a bit judgmental towards the players who joined LIV Golf initially, and I realize now that not everyone is in the same position as me or Tiger Woods.”

His remarks, especially after Jon Rahm signed with LIV Golf, caused quite a stir. Now, Rory McIlroy’s ex-agent, Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler, shared with Bunkered his thoughts on Rory’s change of heart and what it could mean for his potential future with LIV Golf. Chandler mentioned:

“Rory is of the ilk that he’ll say something because he likes to have an opinion but he’s quite happy to apologise for it and that’s what he’s done. If you were being cynical, you might say he’s going to sign for about £750million in a month’s time with LIV because he’s paving the way that LIV’s okay now, whereas it wasn’t.”

“Who knows? He doesn’t need £750m but it’s odd what he’s done and I’m sure it’s a possibility. If he does it or not, I don’t know, but if Rahm can do it, most guys can do it. I think number one, there’s a 10% possibility he’s favouring his way to sign for LIV, but he realises that the whole bickering and fighting is no good for golf. The man in the street must find it appalling the sums of money being spoken.”

It’s interesting to consider the reasons behind Rory McIlroy and his former agent Andrew Chandler parting ways. In 2012, Rory publicly blamed his agent for leading him astray, pointing to instances like giving up his PGA Tour card and skipping the Players Championship in 2010.

While LIV Golf may be eager to have Rory on board and offer him a lucrative deal, Rory’s history suggests he may not be inclined to make that switch.

In the end, it is possible that Rory McIlroy might consider joining LIV Golf in the future. They would gladly welcome him and present him with an irresistible offer. However, based on Rory’s history, it doesn’t seem likely that he would be open to such a move.

Considering Rory’s current wealth of nearly $200 million and the potential of a $750 million contract from LIV Golf, it’s clear that he is already making a fortune with the PGA Tour. Additionally, he has plans to participate in the arena golf league alongside Tiger Woods once they have their venue rebuilt.

Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that some golfers have claimed that money isn’t their main motivation, only to later join LIV Golf when presented with their offer. Therefore, it’s not completely impossible that Rory McIlroy could eventually decide to play on the LIV Golf tour.
