Rory McIlroy’s true feelings on Saudi investment in golf as LIV aim to recruit up to 12 new stars

Rory McIlroy has a clear vision for golf’s future despite more players potentially jumping ship to the breakaway LIV Golf tour – with as many as 12 contacting Greg Norman.

Rory McIlroy, a dedicated PGA Tour supporter, acknowledges the importance of the Middle East in the future of golf while advocating for a World Tour.

Despite his criticism of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, McIlroy believes that mending relationships is possible through discussions involving the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the PGA, and the DP World Tour.

With a clear vision for the sport’s future, McIlroy emphasizes the need for a global approach that includes regions like the southern hemisphere, such as Australia and South Africa.

The Far East, including Korea, Japan, and China, as well as the Middle East, particularly Dubai and Saudi Arabia, have been key destinations for us. We have been traveling from east to west and back to the United States during the spring and summer seasons.

It is unlikely that there will be significant changes in the overall look of our schedule, but there may be some adjustments at the beginning and end of the year.

On the other hand, the PGA Tour may experience a loss of players, as LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman has revealed that more players are considering joining the series after Jon Rahm’s decision. Norman mentioned that “eight to 12” players have expressed interest in joining the series.

He stated that the value of their platform is evident in the enthusiasm shown by PGA Tour players towards LIV. The players who have joined LIV are extremely pleased with their decision.

LIV offers a unique experience compared to the DP World Tour or the PGA Tour, and the players are eager to participate in both. This has led to the creation of something extraordinary – a franchise, a team model that has been wholeheartedly embraced by the players.

Towards the end of the previous year, I expressed the following: each individual has their own interests in this game, and this is the outcome when the landscape is quite divided at this stage.

Therefore, the challenge lies in aligning everyone’s interests and persuading them that this is the correct course of action for the game of golf as a whole. If we can successfully convince everyone of this, then the task would be relatively straightforward. However, at present, our main objective is to get everyone on the same page and working towards a common goal.
