LIV Golf may have made Patrick Reed very wealthy but it’s also led to his drop in the world rankings, prompting a dig from Eddie Pepperell aimed at the former Masters champion.
Eddie Pepperell has humorously mocked Patrick Reed for falling outside the top 100 rankings after his move to join LIV Golf.
Reed, a former World No. 5, a Masters champion, and a multiple PGA Tour winner, is facing a significant drop in rankings this week, as indicated by @VC606, a stats account. However, it is worth noting that players participating in LIV Golf do not receive ranking points for their tournaments, as the Official World Golf Ranking denied them accreditation in October 2023.
The ongoing rivalry between Pepperell and Reed has resurfaced once again, sparked by a playful comment. While Pepperell acknowledged Reed’s exceptional skills as a player, he humorously mentioned the possibility of legal action due to his new ranking. “Reed is still a terrific player,” Pepperell expressed on X. “Let’s hope he refrains from suing the OWGR.”
Reed’s unsuccessful $750 million defamation lawsuit against members of the golf media has been mentioned in the comment. In addition to the case being dismissed, Reed was required to cover the legal expenses of the journalists and publications he sued.
Upon learning about the lawsuit, Pepperell referred to Reed as a “ridiculous clown.” Pepperell has previously criticized Reed, particularly when he was accused of cheating during the 2018 Hero World Challenge.
Pepperell expressed his disbelief at Reed’s actions, stating, “What were you possibly thinking?” This occurred during the time when Reed joined LIV Golf in 2022, a period when numerous golfers transitioned to the Saudi-backed tour and left the PGA Tour.
Reed has accumulated more than $18 million since transitioning to LIV in June 2022, a substantial sum of money regardless of his OWGR ranking. However, Reed maintains that he did not make the career switch for financial gain. In an Instagram caption, he expressed, “The team element is one of my favourite parts. We’ve got camaraderie and competition in the same tournament.
“There’s a list of great things to love! Even playing Friday-Sunday adds to the ease. If you haven’t attended, there are just a few left this season, and I really think fans of this sport are sure to enjoy. IYKYK.”
On the other hand, Pepperell has remained faithful to the DP Tour, now known as the European Tour due to sponsorship reasons. Despite observing LIV Golf and attempting to support it, Pepperell still finds the entire concept “cringe” after witnessing winning celebrations.
“I tried, sincerely, I just tried to watch this and feel something genuine. Joy, inspiration, something,” Pepperell wrote on X in response to a video of Bryson DeChambeau celebrating the 2023 LIV Golf Team Championship. “And I just cringed. It’s just all cringe, the whole show, the teams, the individuals. Hate to s*** on something but honestly, it’s just so far away from being compelling.”
