Mick Schumacher and 15 more ex-F1 drivers join Le Mans 24 Hours entry list

A provisional entry list for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which includes the name of Mick Schumacher, has been released.

The provisional entry list for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in June has been unveiled, featuring a massive 62-car field with 16 former F1 drivers. Mick Schumacher, son of the legendary Michael Schumacher, is among those making their Le Mans debut this year.

Le Mans is known as one of the most prestigious races in motorsport, testing the endurance and skill of drivers like no other. Unlike traditional races, the winner of the Le Mans 24 Hour is determined by the team that covers the most distance over a full day of racing.

Since 2021, Le Mans has introduced hypercars to the race, attracting even more attention from top drivers. This has led to the participation of well-known names from the world of F1, including previous winner Fernando Alonso.

Ahead of the 2024 edition, additional former F1 drivers have joined the lineup, including the well-known Schumacher. The 24-year-old, who serves as a reserve driver for Mercedes, will be competing for the Alpine team at Le Mans instead.

In other news, British driver Jenson Button has also confirmed his participation, committing to a full season in the World Endurance Championship. Button first raced at Le Mans in 2018, but had to retire due to an engine failure towards the end of the race.

The 2009 F1 World Champion is set to represent Hertz Team Jota in France later this year, while Ferrari is determined to defend their 2023 title. Last year, Antonio Giovinazzi, James Calado, and Alessandro Pier Guidi secured victory for Ferrari, and the Italian team is once again a strong contender this season.

A total of 16 former F1 drivers are included in the preliminary list, and the upcoming race in June is anticipated to be an exciting one. Following the announcement of the entry list, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming Le Mans 24 Hour race.

“The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a truly iconic event in the world of motorsport,” he remarked. “It serves as the traditional centerpiece of the FIA World Endurance Championship season.

“Having had the pleasure of witnessing this incredible race last year during its centenary celebration, I am eagerly looking forward to this year’s edition as we mark 120 years of the FIA.”

The lineup of cars is truly impressive, featuring 23 Hypercars from nine different manufacturers leading the pack of 62 cars, along with 23 LMGT3s ready to battle it out in the GT category.

Endurance racing is thriving, and this entry list is a testament to how effective regulations can generate interest and fierce competition.
