After being confirmed as a billionaire recently, Tiger Woods doesn’t need the money — but a conspiracy theory has emerged to suggest otherwise.
The 48-year-old golfer had to pull out during his second round at the $30m Genesis Invitation in California over the weekend.
It was another disappointing setback for the 15-time major champion as he tries to make a comeback in golf.
Reports suggest that Woods may be considering retirement, with claims that he is only continuing to play to promote his new clothing line, Sun Day Red.
Woods recently launched his apparel and golf gear company at the Riviera Country Club following his departure from Nike after a partnership that lasted 27 years.
According to a report by The Daily Mail, Woods continues to make appearances at high profile events not because he needs his new venture to succeed, but rather to maintain his brand.
A source mentioned, “If Tiger could retire, he would. His body is beat up, but for his brand, he still has to make and keep appearances and make a go at it. After his car accident, he thought that was it.
There was almost an amputation in play, so to be back even at all is sort of a miracle.”
The recent illness that caused him to withdraw from the latest tournament is truly regrettable.
However, he will make a comeback in order to promote his new brand Sun Day Red, along with managing other aspects of his life.
Despite his desire to retire, he will return to the game.
Woods serves as the tournament host for the Genesis Invitational organized by his TGR foundation.
According to reports, Woods has earned over $500 million from his collaboration with Nike.
Additionally, he has also made a significant amount of money through sponsorship deals with Gatorade, Monster Energy, TaylorMade, and Rolex.
The upcoming Sun Day Red is expected to be another lucrative venture for him.
Woods mentioned that he has been working on this new range for several years and believes that it’s the perfect time in his life.
This information was shared during the launch event, as reported by NCA NewsWire.
I have transitioned into a new phase of life. I am no longer a child, as life has changed and I now have children of my own. This shift is significant as I strive to create a product and brand that I can truly be proud of.
Woods terminated his partnership with Nike, which started when he became a professional golfer in August 1996 with his “Hello, World” campaign. This occurred late last year after the company ceased its golf equipment business in 2016.
Now, he is fully committed to TaylorMade for an apparel and footwear line that features a logo of a tiger stretching across the three words, symbolizing his 15 major championships.
“I have gained valuable knowledge throughout the years and have a wealth of experience in adjusting my apparel and footwear to enhance my performance based on their construction,” Woods stated.
Throughout his entire career, Woods has consistently worn some form of red during the final round of tournaments.
This tradition was influenced by his mother, Kultida, who hails from Thailand and believed that red was his power color.
This choice of attire has undoubtedly played a role in his remarkable success, contributing to his impressive record of 82 PGA Tour wins, which includes an astounding five Masters titles.
Woods suffered a car crash in February 2021 that resulted in broken bones in his right leg as he aimed to regain his previous level of performance.
He has participated in six official tournaments following his return from the injury, but has withdrawn from three of them – the 2022 PGA Championship, the 2023 Masters, and now the Genesis Invitational.
Woods had initially planned to compete in one tournament per month leading up to the 2024 major season.
