Johnson wins big in Las Vegas and bags £3.1m LIV Golf prize on Super Bowl weekend

Dustin Johnson won big in Las Vegas this weekend as the American bagged the £3.1m prize for his victory at LIV Golf’s latest event.

In 2024, the dazzling city of Las Vegas played host to the LIV Golf roster during the Super Bowl weekend.

With the iconic MSG Sphere as a witness, Johnson, a two-time major winner, showcased his skills by birdying three out of the final six holes, securing a victory in Nevada by a single shot.

Talor Gooch and Peter Uihlein claimed the second spot with an impressive 11-under, while Matthew Wolf trailed closely behind by just one shot.

Windy Johnson win

Johnson expressed his delight, stating, “What a fantastic win! I was well aware that the conditions would pose a challenge.”

“At the beginning of the day, things didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped.”

“I was hitting some excellent shots, but unfortunately, they were landing in unfavorable positions. I was executing the shots I intended, but I struggled to adapt to the wind.”

With this triumph in Las Vegas, Johnson now boasts three individual titles on the Saudi Arabia-supported LIV Golf breakaway circuit, in addition to the seven team titles he has secured alongside his 4Aces GC team.

However, it was Smash GC that emerged victorious and claimed the team title at the prestigious Las Vegas Country Club.

Comprised of a talented American trio consisting of Brooks Koepka, Gooch, and Jason Kokrak, along with Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, they secured a remarkable seven-shot victory, finishing at an impressive 33-under. Following closely behind, 4Aces GC secured the second position, while Bubba Watson’s Rangegoats GC settled for third place, finishing at 24-under.

Finally

McDowell secured his first victory on the LIV Golf circuit after participating in 24 events. He joined Koepka’s Smash GC as a free-agent during the off season.

Even though McDowell has been living in Florida for 15 years, he hasn’t forgotten how to play in windy conditions. After a bogey-free Saturday, he expressed his gratitude for his ability to adapt. McDowell also mentioned that the game has been progressing positively over the past six months.

Captain Koepka shared his strategy of bringing in experienced players who know how to win. He wanted to create a competitive environment week after week.

Currently, Johnson is leading the individual LIV Golf standings. He is ahead of round one winner Joaquin Niemann and the notable rookie of the season, Jon Rahm.

Gooch and Sergio Garcia are among the top five players, with the ultimate winner receiving a bonus of over £14m after 12 rounds.

Rahm’s Legion XIII currently holds the lead in the team championship, followed by Crushers GC and Smash GC in second and third place.

4Aces GC and Torque GC complete the top five, while Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers GC and Kevin Na’s Iron Heads GC have yet to score any points.

The LIV Golf roster will take a break from competition until next month, when they will travel to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for round three.

After that, the calendar will take them to Hong Kong, Miami, Adelaide, Singapore, Houston, Nashville, Andalucia, the United Kingdom, and Greenbrier.
