Mick Schumacher deals verdict on replacing Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes ties remain

Mick Schumacher remains connected to the Mercedes F1 operation, despite his newfound commitments with Alpine.

Mick Schumacher has made it clear that he has no intentions of eyeing Lewis Hamilton’s spot at Mercedes for the 2025 season, even though he has ties with the Silver Arrows. The talented German driver is currently focused on his upcoming debut in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine, but he still maintains a connection to Toto Wolff’s team through his role as a test and reserve driver.

In a surprising move earlier this month, Hamilton decided to join Ferrari for the 2025 season, triggering an exit clause in his Mercedes contract and bringing an end to their longstanding partnership that spanned over a decade.

Hamilton’s decision to reveal his plans early has created a highly sought-after opportunity within the team. With team principal Wolff not having a clear successor in mind, there are numerous possibilities for the coveted seat at Silver Arrows.

One potential candidate for the 2025 drive could be Schumacher, considering his current role as the team’s test and reserve driver. Another contender could be Frederik Vesti, who was the only Mercedes junior to participate in an FP1 session in 2023. Despite being younger, Vesti holds a higher position in the team’s hierarchy and will continue his role alongside his WEC commitments in 2024.

When questioned by the media about his interest in Hamilton’s seat for the 2025 campaign, Schumacher replied, “To be honest, I haven’t given it much thought.” He then went on to share his enthusiasm for the new Alpine Hypercar project. Nonetheless, Schumacher did admit that he continues to keep an eye on the world of F1, hoping for a chance to make a comeback in the future. He further expressed, “Being here has reignited my passion for racing, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I suppose the feeling is mutual.”

Bruno Famin approached me early last year and asked if I wanted to join the programme. At that time, I was focused on Formula One, but unfortunately, that opportunity didn’t work out for me. However, the offer to go into Endurance racing was still on the table, which was a great chance for me to race again and stay connected to Formula One.

As for Schumacher, he is still searching for a way back into the grid after his F1 career ended disappointingly with Haas. Despite being linked to Williams for the 2024 season, they chose to extend Logan Sargeant’s contract instead.
