Report: Tyrrell Hatton will not be allowed to compete in Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL when he signs for LIV Golf this week.
According to golf reporter Dan Rapaport from Barstool Sports, Tyrrell Hatton will no longer be a part of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s new TGL. This is due to his upcoming move to the LIV Golf League, which is reportedly happening this week.
As per Telegraph Sport, the 32-year-old golfer is expected to sign a $60 million deal with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League.
Hatton, who is currently ranked 16th in the world and a star of the 2023 European Ryder Cup, will allegedly be joining Jon Rahm’s LIV team called ‘Legion XIII’.
It is estimated that Rahm’s deal with LIV Golf is worth ten times more than Hatton’s.
LIV Golf commences their third season this week at Mayakoba, Mexico.
It is believed that Hatton has been in talks about leaving the PGA Tour for several weeks, but it seems that he has now been convinced to take the leap.
The risk he faces is whether or not he will maintain his position among the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, which would secure his qualification for the major championships.
Despite winning six times on the DP World Tour and once on the PGA Tour, Hatton is yet to achieve major success.
Another factor he has been considering is whether or not he will still be eligible for selection in next year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.
Hatton and Rahm displayed exceptional teamwork during their unbeaten run in Rome.
As per the latest reports, Hatton has no intentions of relinquishing his membership from the DP World Tour, and the same goes for Rahm.
Hatton to be removed from TGL
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s new TGL will have one circuit missing when Hatton joins LIV Golf this week.
This information has been confirmed by Dan Rapaport of Barstool Sports.
It is important to note that all players participating in TGL must be members of the PGA Tour and cannot be competing in the rival LIV Golf League.
Additionally, Hatton was previously part of McIlroy’s Boston Common team, along with Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley.
When Hatton signs a new deal with LIV Golf, he will have to leave TGL.
It is yet to be determined whom McIlroy will choose to substitute Hatton with on his TGL team for the upcoming year of 2025.
Rapaport tweeted on 29 January:
“Tyrrell Hatton’s move to LIV means he’s out of TGL, Tiger and Rory’s simulator league, per sources. Rahm pulled out of TGL before going to LIV. A player must be a PGA Tour member in good standing to play in TGL. Another wrinkle in ongoing negotiations between PGA Tour and PIF.”
The launch of TGL, a cutting-edge golf league infused with technology and founded by Woods and McIlroy, was originally scheduled for this month. However, due to an unforeseen incident where the stadium roof collapsed in late 2023, the league’s commencement has been postponed until 2025.
Rahm was originally included in the star-studded PGA Tour lineup, however, he decided to withdraw his name mere days before officially announcing his participation in the LIV Golf League.
