Christian Horner defends Sergio Perez

Christian Horner has once again stressed that Sergio Perez is the right driver for them for 2024.

Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, has emphasized that Sergio Perez is currently the suitable driver for the team. However, in order to secure an extension of his contract, Perez will need to demonstrate exceptional performance throughout this season.

Perez’s current contract with Red Bull is set to expire at the end of 2024, and it is widely expected that he will not be offered an extension.

The prevailing rumor suggests that Daniel Ricciardo from AlphaTauri may replace Perez for the 2025 F1 season, provided that the eight-time race winner delivers a strong performance for the sister team.

If Ricciardo performs impressively, his chances of earning a second opportunity with Red Bull will greatly increase.

In the latter part of 2023, there were talks circulating about the potential of Ricciardo stepping in for Perez in 2024 due to the Mexican driver’s inconsistent performance.

Nevertheless, Perez’s impressive second-place finish in the Drivers’ Championship gave Red Bull no reason to let him go before his contract ends. This point was emphasized by Horner on multiple occasions, highlighting the importance of honoring their agreement.

It is worth considering that the 33-year-old might be offered a new contract for 2025, but it is likely contingent on him replicating his championship position from the previous season.

Unfortunately for Perez, Red Bull has a pool of talented drivers who could potentially replace him if he struggles in 2024.

Currently, however, Horner has reiterated that Perez holds the second seat at the team based in Milton Keynes, but it is his responsibility to achieve favorable outcomes in order to warrant a contract extension.

Horner stated, “The seat belongs to Checo [Perez].

We have placed him in the car because we have confidence in him as the suitable driver at present.

It is now up to him to showcase his capabilities over the upcoming nine months, proving that our belief in him extends to 2025.”

Certainly, our pool of talent includes exceptional individuals such as Daniel Ricciardo, Liam Lawson, and Yuki Tsunoda. Only time will reveal their true potential and capabilities.

Perez’s remarkable triumphs in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan last season undoubtedly demonstrate his speed and competence, making him a strong contender to continue his journey with Red Bull beyond 2024.

However, it is crucial for Perez to consistently showcase his skills throughout the season. Although he faced a setback in 2023 during the middle of the campaign, leading to speculations about his future, he has the opportunity to prove himself and silence any doubts.
