Nike lost the greatest name in golf earlier this week after ending their deal with Tiger Woods, but the brand have been quick to move on and have teamed up with LIV Golf.
Shortly after parting ways with Tiger Woods, one of their most recognizable athletes, Nike has now teamed up with Brooks Koepka and his LIV Golf team, Smash GC.
This marks the end of a 27-year partnership between Nike and Woods, who had become synonymous with the iconic swoosh during his illustrious career as one of golf’s greatest players.
In a statement confirming the conclusion of his Nike deal, Woods expressed gratitude towards Phil Knight, the former Nike CEO, for bringing together this iconic partnership.
He also extended his thanks to the Nike employees and the incredible athletes he had the privilege of working with throughout the years.
There has been speculation about the possibility of another chapter, and indeed, there will be. We look forward to seeing you in Los Angeles! Tiger Woods’ recent loss has not deterred the sports brand, as they have already resumed operations by partnering with Koepka under the new name LIV Golf.
On Thursday, LIV’s official social media platform shared a photo of custom-made Nike golf shoes featuring the Smash GC logo, which has garnered attention from the golfing community worldwide. Koepka, a longstanding Nike Golf ambassador, has continued to represent the brand even after joining the breakaway league in 2022.
While some of his fellow LIV teammates have chosen to wear their own team apparel, Koepka has opted to keep the Nike swoosh on his shirt and cap. Nike has been gradually reestablishing its presence in the golfing world, despite the setback of Woods’ departure being the most recent development.
In 2016, the brand made the decision to discontinue the production of golf clubs, despite their usage by notable players like Woods and Rory McIlroy on the PGA Tour. This change also led to the discontinuation of Nike’s golf ball and golf bag manufacturing.
Ever since then, the brand has persistently manufactured golf clothing. However, the departure of both Woods and Jason Day in early 2024 has raised additional concerns about the brand’s prospects in the sport. Currently, both Koepka and McIlroy are still endorsing the brand, along with Tommy Fleetwood and LPGA Tour sensation Nelly Korda.
