Red Bull given new Sergio Perez replacement options as F1 stars ‘offer to drive for free’

Sergio Perez is fighting for his Red Bull future after an underwhelming 2023 season as qualifying woes and inconsistencies led to undying speculation that the Mexican could be replaced.

Christian Horner acknowledged that there are Formula 1 drivers who are eager to replace Sergio Perez to the extent that they are willing to drive for free.

The topic of drivers offering their services for free is not new, as the legendary Ayrton Senna once famously did so for Williams. This was brought up during Horner’s conversation with Sky Sports, where he discussed Perez’s future and the various options available to him.

Horner has been open about his intention to explore all possible options as Perez enters the final year of his contract. Despite finishing second last year, Perez’s performance was not entirely convincing, despite having a fast car.

“Checo is undoubtedly a skilled racer, but being Max’s teammate is an incredibly challenging role,” Horner stated. He has assured Perez that he will honor his current contract, but he has also cautioned him that there are numerous talented drivers who would jump at the opportunity to race for the top team.

He has really shown impressive mental strength to handle that situation. The key area for him to focus on is Saturdays, ensuring that his qualifying performance is much closer to Max [Verstappen]. It’s crucial for him to start higher up on the grid, especially if the grid is going to become more competitive. We can’t afford to have many cars between him and Max.

The year 2024 holds great significance as many drivers’ contracts will be ending. We have exceptional talent within our own team. Naturally, our car is highly desirable for other drivers who want to join us.

Regarding drivers offering their services to Red Bull for free, there have been some instances, but there are no guarantees. Checo is our driver, and if he performs well, we would like to retain him for 2025. It all depends on how he compares to his teammate.

Horner’s last statement clearly indicates to Perez where he needs to improve in the upcoming year. Despite finishing second in the championship in 2023, he scored less than half the points Verstappen managed, even though they had the same car.

Red Bull’s dominance made it inconsequential for them, but if their rivals close the gap in 2024, as Horner anticipates, they will rely on their second driver to consistently score significant points.

“I anticipate that with stable regulations and diminishing returns for us, as we reached the peak faster than others, the competition will become more balanced,” stated the Red Bull chief. “In this industry, if you stay stagnant, you’re essentially moving backwards. We managed to progress faster than others, but now we’re facing the law of diminishing returns.”
